The standard pendant light height is 75–90 cm (30–36 inches) above a surface — like a kitchen island or a dining table — and at least 2.1 m (7 feet) from the floor in any open walkway. Over a counter or table, measure from the surface to the bottom of the pendant. In a walk-through space, measure from the floor. Add about 7.5 cm (3 inches) of drop for every extra foot of ceiling above the usual 8 feet.

How high should a bedside pendant hang?

A hanging pendant beside the bed frees up your nightstand and looks gorgeous. Hang the bottom 50–70 cm above the mattress or the nightstand top.

You want it low enough to read by, high enough that you don’t bump it sitting up. Roughly level with your shoulders when you’re propped up on the pillows is the sweet spot.
