The best study lamp puts light on your page, not in your eyes. Look for a shade or head that hides the bulb, an arm or height you can adjust, and steady warm light that fills the desk without hard shadows. Put it on the side opposite your writing hand, and set the head a little above eye level.
That is the short answer. The longer one matters, because a study lamp is the light you sit closest to, for the most hours. A good one makes a late chapter feel easy. A bad one makes your eyes tired before the page is done.
Key takeaways
- Hide the bulb. If you can see the bulb from your chair, the lamp will glare.
- Adjustable wins. An arm, a swivel head or a height you can change lets you aim light where you work.
- Opposite hand. Right-handed? Lamp on the left. Your hand will not throw a shadow on the page.
- Room light too. Never study in a dark room with one bright lamp. Keep a soft ceiling or wall light on.
- Warm 3000K. All our lamps are made for warm 3000K light, which is calm for long evenings.
What makes the best table lamp for study?
Four things, in this order.
1. No glare. The light should come out of the bottom of a shade or a head and land on the desk. A bare bulb at eye level is the most common mistake. Opal borosilicate glass and metal shades both work, as long as they hide the bulb from where you sit.
2. Reach. The light needs to reach the middle of your page. On a deep desk, that means an arm. On a small bedside study table, a fixed lamp is enough.
3. Steady light. Fit a good LED bulb or choose a lamp with a built-in LED. Poor-quality bulbs can flicker, and you notice it most when you read.
4. A base that stays put. A heavy base means the arm does not tip when you push it. Marble and stainless steel bases do this well.
Here is the thing. Brightness is rarely the problem. Light in the wrong place is.
LED study lamp or a lamp with a bulb?
Both work. The choice is about convenience.
An LED study lamp has the light built in. There is no bulb to buy or change, the head can be slimmer, and the light is always the same warm 3000K. Our built-in LED lamps carry a 1-year warranty on the LED module.
A bulb lamp takes a GU10, G9 or E27 bulb. You buy the bulb separately and can replace it in two minutes years later. Fit a 3000K warm-white LED bulb: about 5–7 W for one GU10 head, or 3–4 W each in a three-G9 lamp.
One honest note. None of our lamps are dimmable. If you want less light, angle the head away or switch on a softer room light.

Our study lamps, and who each one suits
These are the lamps we make for desks. Each one is built in our own Greater Noida factory on 304-grade stainless steel, which never rusts, with a lifetime rust warranty on the stainless parts.
For a deep desk: the balance-arm brass desk lamp. Our brass desk lamp stands 48 cm tall and reaches up to 60 cm across the desk on a counterbalanced arm. The brushed gold-finish head hides a GU10 bulb behind an opal borosilicate glass diffuser, so the light is soft at the edge and bright on the page. Bulb not included.
For a desk you share with a laptop: the antique brass LED task light. The antique brass desk lamp sits on a white marble base and adjusts from 41 to 66 cm tall, with an arm reach of up to 56 cm. It has a built-in 3000K LED, so nothing to buy. The marble base is real stone, cut and polished, and heavy enough to hold the arm steady.

For a student’s study table: the retro study lamp. Our retro study lamp is 49 cm tall with a 35 cm black disc shade that throws a wide, warm pool of light straight down. Three G9 holders sit under the disc, and a pull-chain switch turns it on. The wide shade means the light covers a full notebook and textbook side by side.
For a bedside study corner: the wireless charging LED lamp. The LED table lamp with wireless charging pad is just 25 cm tall, with a 7W built-in 3000K LED and a charging pad in the base for your phone. It suits a narrow bedside table where you read before sleep.
No desk space at all? Take the lamp off the desk. A wall mounted study lamp fixes beside the desk or bed, with an opal glass globe for the room and a swivel reading spot for the page.

How tall should a study lamp be?
Sit at your desk and look straight ahead. The bottom of the shade or head should be roughly level with your eyes, or a little above. Higher than that and the bulb shows. Lower and the light only reaches a small circle.
- Standard desk (about 75 cm high): a lamp of 40–50 cm, or an adjustable arm.
- Bedside study table: 25–45 cm is usually enough.
- Deep desk (more than 60 cm front to back): choose an arm that reaches the middle of the desk.
Where should you put it on the desk?
On the side opposite your writing hand, a little in front of you. Right-handed people put the lamp on the left. Left-handed people put it on the right. This keeps your hand from casting a shadow on the line you are writing.
On a computer desk, aim the light at your papers and keyboard, not at the screen. Light on the screen bounces back into your eyes.
Many Vastu guides suggest a study desk that faces east or north, with good light on the work. We see that as simple good sense: a calm, well-lit corner helps you stay at the desk longer. We don’t promise marks or luck. We do promise a warm, steady light.
An office table lamp for work from home
Working from home is studying with a deadline. The same rules hold. Choose an adjustable work desk lamp for long calls and spreadsheets, keep a room light on behind the screen, and avoid a bare bulb anywhere in your view. The brass balance-arm lamp and the antique brass LED task light both work well as an office table lamp, and they look good on a video call too.
Why a lamp made by hand lasts longer on a desk
A study lamp is handled every day. Arms are pushed, heads are turned, bases are knocked. That is why we build ours on 304-grade stainless steel instead of thin painted metal. A craftsman cuts, bends and joins the arm, then sets the joint so the head stays where you leave it.
We have made lights in our own factory since 2015, and we keep spares for 10+ years. If a joint loosens or a diffuser cracks, we have the part. Shipping is free across India, and EMI is available. For more on choosing a lamp for any room, read our table lamp buying guide.
FAQs
Which colour light is best for a study lamp?
Warm white around 3000K is comfortable for long evening reading, and it is what all our lamps are made for. More important than colour is where the light falls: on the page, with the bulb hidden from your eyes.
Is an LED study lamp better than a bulb lamp?
An LED study lamp has the light built in, so there is no bulb to buy and the head can be slimmer. A bulb lamp lets you change the bulb yourself years later. Both give good light if the bulb or LED is steady and warm.
Should the study lamp be on the left or right?
Put it on the side opposite your writing hand. Right-handed students place it on the left; left-handed students on the right. Your hand then will not shadow the page.
Is a JagMag study lamp dimmable?
No. None of our lamps are dimmable. Angle the head or arm away from the page, or switch on a softer room light, when you want less light.
Can I use a wall light as a study lamp?
Yes. A wall mounted study lamp with a swivel reading spot frees the whole desk. Fix it beside the desk, a little above your eye level when seated.
How fast will a study lamp reach me?
In-stock lamps dispatch within 4 working days, and made-to-order lamps in 12–15 working days. Shipping is free anywhere in India.
Light the page, not the room
The best study lamp is the one you stop noticing. It hides its bulb, reaches your page and stays where you put it, night after night. Pick the reach your desk needs, place it opposite your writing hand, and keep a soft room light on. Shop our study table lamp range online, or ask us on WhatsApp if you are not sure which fits your desk.
