Know your light

This brass uplight pendant light is a 300 mm brass disc with a flared trumpet dropping through its centre, hung on a twisted fabric cord. The LED sits at the junction and fires upward into the dish, so what you see is reflected light off brass rather than a lamp. 191 mm from the top of the disc to the tip of the finial.

Where it fits

An indirect fitting behaves differently from a shaded one. Hang it where you want the room lit rather than a surface.

  • Over a dining table: Because nothing points down at the table, nobody gets a lamp in their eyeline across it. Hang at 75 to 80 cm above the tabletop.
  • In a living room or a snug: One in the middle of the room gives soft ambient light with no glare from any seat.
  • In a bedroom: Indirect light is the easy answer overhead, and there is no bright spot to look at from the bed.
  • Under a low or sloped ceiling: At 191 mm tall it takes up almost no headroom for the spread it gives.

Why you will use it every day

You never see the light source. That is the whole idea.

Most pendants put a bulb inside a shade and point it at you. This brass uplight pendant light does the opposite — the LED fires up into a 300 mm brass dish and the room gets what bounces back. The result is a wide, even, completely glare-free light, and the brass warms it on the way down in a way no white reflector can.

The finial at the tip unscrews by hand. With it on, the fixture is purely indirect. Take it off and you open a small downward aperture as well, which gives you a soft pool directly beneath — useful over a dining table where you want the table itself picked out a little.

The brass is left raw and lightly textured rather than polished, so the reflected light is diffuse instead of mirror-sharp. You can see the grain of the metal in the finish, and it will darken with age rather than staying bright.

It runs an integrated LED module at roughly 880 lumens — about the output of a 60 W incandescent bulb, but all of it delivered indirectly. There is no bulb to buy and nothing to replace.

The cord is twisted fabric rather than PVC, which is the correct detail on a fixture this plain — a moulded cable would undo the whole thing.

We make this brass uplight pendant light in our own Greater Noida factory and hold spare parts for 10 years and more.

Light & finish

880 lumens of indirect light will comfortably handle a dining table or a small sitting room as the main fitting. It is ambient light, not task light — you will still want a lamp for reading.

Because every ray bounces off brass before it reaches you, the light arrives warmer and softer than the module alone would suggest. That is worth knowing if you are matching it to other fittings in the same room.

The disc is 300 mm across but only 191 mm deep overall, so it reads as a thin horizontal plane from across a room and almost disappears when viewed edge-on.

Unlit it is a piece of raw brass — a shallow dish and a trumpet, nothing else. It works against plaster, lime wash and timber, and it suits low ceilings where a tall fixture would crowd the space.

Vaastu & positive energy

Brass is a long-favoured metal in Indian homes, and indirect light that fills a room without a harsh source is the quality usually preferred overhead.

A brass uplight pendant light throws light upward first, which is traditionally read as an opening, lifting gesture rather than a downward-pressing one — a useful quality above a dining table where people sit for long stretches.

The form is entirely round and has no sharp edge or point directed into the room. Rounded overhead shapes above seating are the ones Vaastu tends to favour.

Common questions

How big is the brass uplight pendant light?

300 mm (30 cm) across and 191 mm (19.1 cm) tall overall. It weighs about 3.4 kg including the cord.

Does it need a bulb?

No. The LED module is built in and gives roughly 880 lumens. Nothing to buy and nothing to change.

Why can I not see the light source?

Because it fires upward into the brass dish and you only ever see the reflection. That is what makes it glare-free from every seat in the room.

What does the little cap at the bottom do?

It unscrews by hand. Left on, the fixture is purely indirect. Taken off, it opens a downward aperture as well, so you get a soft pool of light directly below in addition to the reflected light.

Is 880 lumens enough on its own?

For a dining table or a small sitting room, yes, as ambient light. It is not a task light — plan on lamps or downlights if you need to read or work in the same space.

Is it sold as a single pendant?

Yes, and the price is per piece. Two or three in a row work well over a long table — tell us the quantity and we ship them together.

Can I get it in a different size or finish?

Yes. We manufacture in-house, so the disc diameter, cord length and metal finish can all change. Custom runs take 15 to 20 days against 60 to 120 days for an imported equivalent.

How do I clean it?

A dry microfibre cloth over the dish, inside and out — dust settles in the bowl and dulls the reflection, which is the one thing that actually affects how this fixture performs. Avoid metal polish; the raw finish is meant to age.
