Alabaster Bowl Pendant Light – 18 cm Brass Cradle | Jagmag Lights

This alabaster bowl pendant light holds a hand-cut stone bowl, 180 mm across, inside a cradle of four antique-brass arches. The arches cross over the top and clamp onto a brass plate, so the bowl reads as carried rather than hung. Lit, the stone turns warm and the frame becomes a dark outline around it.

Where it fits

At 180 mm wide this is a single-point light, not a room light. Hang it where you want one warm spot rather than general brightness.

• Beside a bed: One each side, hung 75 to 90 cm above the mattress. It frees both nightstands and throws light onto a book instead of into your partner’s eyes.
• Over a kitchen island or breakfast counter: Two or three in a row, 75 to 80 cm above the worktop, spaced about 70 cm apart.
• In an entry or on a landing: A single one, dropped low enough to be seen properly as you come up the stairs.
• Over a two or four seater dining table: Centred at roughly 80 cm above the tabletop.

Why you will use it every day

The bowl faces down. That is the whole point of it.

Most stone pendants are closed shapes — they glow evenly and light nothing in particular. This alabaster bowl pendant light is open at the bottom, so you get two things at once: the stone glowing softly from within, and a real pool of usable light on the surface underneath. It is the difference between a fixture you look at and a fixture you read by.

Hand-cut from natural alabaster — which means no two are alike. The veins run differently. The colour shifts. The edges darken where the stone is denser. Light it up and you get a glow that belongs to your piece and nothing else. One block of stone. One light. Never repeated.

The brass cradle is the second thing worth noticing. Four arches, two crossing over two, soldered to a plain brass disc that caps the bowl and carries a small finial at the base. It is structure doing a job, not applied decoration. The antique finish means it will darken gradually with handling rather than staying showroom-bright.

The LED is integrated at 12W, so there is no bulb to buy, no lamp holder showing through the stone and nothing to replace down the line. The cord drops 760 mm from a 100 mm round brass canopy and can be shortened at installation.

Light & finish

Twelve watts at 3000K is a warm, domestic light — closer to a filament bulb than to a downlight, and well suited to the cream tone of the stone.

Switched on, two things happen at once. The bowl walls light from the inside, so the alabaster shows its cloudiness and grain. At the same time the open mouth casts a defined circle of light on whatever is beneath it, about a metre across at bedside height.

Unlit it reads as a pale cream bowl in a dark brass frame. It sits comfortably against plaster, lime wash, panelled walls and wood, and it does not need a dark background to look like something.

Because the stone is thicker at the base and thinner at the rim, the glow is brightest around the top edge of the bowl and softens towards the bottom. That gradient is natural to the material and differs slightly on every piece.
