It’s 7 in the evening. The big ceiling light suddenly feels too harsh.
You switch on one small lamp in the corner — and the whole room softens.
That warm little pool of light is what a good table lamp does. It turns a plain corner into your favourite seat.
Here’s the thing. A table lamp is the easiest, cheapest way to make a room feel warm, calm and finished. But with a hundred shapes, sizes and prices out there, picking the right one gets confusing fast.
So we wrote this table lamp buying guide for real Indian homes — with simple rules, real rooms, and real ₹ prices. By the end you’ll know exactly which one to buy.
The 30-second answer
A table lamp does one of three jobs: task light to read by, ambient light to warm a room, or accent light to show off a corner. Pick the job first, then the look.
For most homes: get the height right (the bottom of the shade near eye level when you sit, about 100–115 cm / 40–45 inches off the floor), keep the shade no wider than the table, and use a warm white LED bulb (2700–3000K). JagMag table lamps start at ₹3,890 and are made in India.

What does a table lamp actually do?
Most people buy a lamp because it looks nice. Fair enough. But a lamp you love for a year does one clear job well.
There are three jobs. Decide yours before you shop:
- Task light: light to read, study or work by. You want it bright enough and close enough — a bedside or desk lamp.
- Ambient light: a soft glow that fills a corner and takes the edge off a harsh ceiling light. This is the cosy living-room lamp.
- Accent light: a beautiful object that also lights up. It dresses a console, an entryway or a side table — style first, brightness second.
Now you might be thinking — can’t one lamp do all three? A little. But pick the main job and the rest falls into place.
What size table lamp do you need?
This is where most people slip up. A lamp that’s too tall looks top-heavy. Too short and it disappears.
Use these five simple rules:
- Measure the table first. The lamp height should be roughly 1.5 times the height of the table it sits on. A tall console wants a shorter lamp; a low side table wants a taller one.
- Mind the bottom of the shade. When you sit beside the lamp, the bottom edge of the shade should land near your eye level — about 100–115 cm (40–45 inches) from the floor. That hides the bulb’s glare and spreads soft light.
- Keep the shade in proportion. The shade should never be wider than the table. As a rule, shade width is about two-thirds the lamp’s total height.
- Think in pairs. Flanking a sofa or a bed with two matching lamps looks calm and balanced. One lamp suits a corner or a narrow console.
- Leave breathing room. The lamp should take up no more than a third of the table surface, so you still have space for a book, a cup or your glasses.
Get these right and even a ₹3,890 lamp looks like it belongs.
Which table lamp suits which room?
Different rooms ask for different lamps. Here’s a quick guide you can scan in ten seconds.
| Room / spot | Best job | Lamp height | Bulb & glow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedside table | Reading + soft glow | 50–65 cm; shade bottom near the top of the headboard | Warm 2700K, 400–600 lumens, dimmable |
| Living-room side table | Ambient + accent | 60–75 cm; shade bottom near seated eye level | Warm 2700–3000K, 500–800 lumens |
| Console / entryway | Accent + welcome | A pair, 45–60 cm each | Warm low glow, style-first |
| Study / work desk | Task | 40–50 cm, light close to the page | Brighter 3000K, 600–800 lumens |
Notice the pattern? Warm light everywhere, more brightness only where you read. That’s the whole game.

The warm amber glow — Glass Table Lamp (Adam) — ₹4,890. An amber stacked-pebble glass base that throws a honey-coloured light. Perfect on a living-room side table when you want cosy, not bright.
The bedside reader — Amber Glass Bedside Lamp (Boudica) — ₹5,290. Soft enough for late-night reading, pretty enough to leave on all evening. Buy two to frame the bed.
The sculptural accent — Sculptural Wood Table Lamp (Etrusco) — ₹7,990. An amphora-shaped tripod in warm wood. This one is a talking point as much as a light — ideal for a console or a reading corner.
The statement piece — Art Deco Brass & Alabaster Table Lamp — ₹9,860. Brushed brass with a tiered alabaster-effect shade. It looks far more expensive than it is and pairs beautifully on either side of a sofa.

Which bulb should you put in a table lamp?
This is the part people skip — and it’s the one that decides how the lamp feels.
Choose a warm white LED bulb, around 2700–3000K. That’s the soft, golden light that makes a room feel calm. Cool white (4000K and up) looks like an office — avoid it at home.
For brightness, 400–600 lumens is plenty for a bedside, and 600–800 lumens works for reading. Pick a dimmable bulb if you can, so the same lamp can be bright for a book and low for winding down.

Why buy a Made-in-India table lamp?
Here’s something most lamp sellers won’t tell you. A lot of the lamps online are imported and stocked — so when a part breaks or you want the same one again, it’s often gone.
JagMag is different. We’re a 100% Make-in-India manufacturer, not an importer. That means:
- Spare parts for 10+ years: a replacement shade or fitting later is no problem, because we make them.
- No China dependency: our own technical team handles any issue here in India — no waiting weeks for an overseas supplier.
- Custom in 15–20 days: want a special size, finish or a matching pair for a project? We make it in 15–20 working days. Importers usually take 60–120.
- Reliable reorders: buying for a hotel, café or builder project? We can make the exact same lamp again, any time.
We’re a DPIIT-recognised, government-funded Indian lighting maker — built to cut the country’s reliance on imported lights. So you get a lamp that’s beautiful and backed for the long run.
Once your corner glows, you might want to layer in more soft light. Our floor lamp buying guide and our guide to wall lights for the living room are the natural next reads.
Table lamp FAQs
What size table lamp is best for a bedside table?
Pick a lamp about 50–65 cm tall so the bottom of the shade sits near the top of your headboard. That keeps the bulb out of your eyes when you lie down to read. Use a warm, dimmable bulb for a soft bedtime glow.
Are table lamps enough to light a whole room?
No — table lamps are meant for soft, layered light, not to light a full room on their own. Use two or three lamps along with your ceiling light. The lamps add warmth and atmosphere; the ceiling light handles overall brightness.
What bulb is best for a table lamp?
Use a warm white LED bulb around 2700–3000K. Choose 400–600 lumens for a bedside or accent lamp and 600–800 lumens for reading. A dimmable bulb lets the same lamp go bright for a book or low for relaxing.
How much do good table lamps cost in India?
JagMag table lamps start at ₹3,890, with designer and statement pieces around ₹8,000–12,000. Because they’re made in India, you also get spare parts for 10+ years and the option of a custom size or finish.
