Wood and Glass Chandelier – 86 cm 4-Light Uplight with Tassels | Jagmag Lights

This wood and glass chandelier sets four 300 mm opal glass bowls on a frame of two shaped wooden rings, hung from three twisted fabric cords and a turned wooden ceiling rose. Every bowl faces upward, so the light washes the ceiling and comes back down soft. 860 mm across, 250 mm deep in the body, and it drops to a maximum of 1030 mm.

Where it fits

At 86 cm across this is a full-size statement fitting. Give it a room with the ceiling height and the floor area to carry it.

• Over a dining table for six to eight: Its natural home. Hang the body 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop and the upward bowls keep every sightline across the table clear.
• In a double-height living room: The 103 cm maximum drop suits a high ceiling, and the piece reads well from a mezzanine or a stair.
• In a foyer or entrance hall: Upward light on a high ceiling makes an entrance feel taller than it is.
• Over a large coffee table: Dropped low in a seating group, with the tassels at around eye level when you stand.

Why you will use it every day

Four bowls, all of them facing the ceiling. Nothing points at anybody.

That is the whole argument for this wood and glass chandelier over a dining table. A conventional chandelier hangs shades or bulbs at eye level and you spend the evening looking past them at the person opposite. Here the glass turns upward, the ceiling does the reflecting, and what falls back onto the table has no source you can stare into.

The frame is where the craft is. Two wooden rings, shaped and steam-bent rather than cut from flat stock, offset from one another so the profile changes as you walk around it. The bowls sit on turned wooden collars with brass rings at the base, and the two rings are pinned together with small wooden blocks.

The rope tassels are hand-knotted and hang from the joints. They are the detail that dates the piece to the 1930s and the reason it reads as a designed object rather than a modern reproduction. They also break up the underside, which would otherwise be a bare wooden ring seen from below.

The suspension is three twisted fabric cords to a turned wooden rose — no chain, no steel rod. That keeps the whole fitting in wood, glass, rope and brass with no visible modern hardware.

It takes four standard E27 bulbs. Four sources across 86 cm is what gives you even light on a long table rather than one bright centre, and you can dim the lot from a single circuit.

We make this wood and glass chandelier in our own Greater Noida factory and hold spare parts for 10 years and more. On a piece with four glass bowls, being able to reorder one bowl rather than replace the chandelier is the difference that matters.

Light & finish

All four bowls throw light upward. What you get on the table is reflected off your ceiling, which means the colour of that ceiling matters — white or off-white gives you the full output, a dark ceiling will absorb a good deal of it.

The opal glass glows warmly at the same time, so the bowls read as four soft discs of light from across the room rather than dark shapes.

Use warm bulbs, 2700K to 3000K. The wood is a mid-warm tone and the glass is cream rather than pure white; a cool bulb fights both and turns the glass slightly grey.

Because the light is entirely indirect, this is ambient rather than task lighting. Over a dining table that is exactly right. In a room where you also want to read, plan on lamps as well.
