You bought a lovely side table. Within a month it holds a remote, a charger and three old bills. Good side table decor is not about buying more things. The size of the table and a few simple choices do most of the work.
Below you will find the sizes guides use, three small sums, and the science of why a lamp makes a table look finished.

The short answer
Side table decor starts with height: keep the table within 5 cm of your sofa arm. Then place three things, a lamp, one useful object and one small natural object. A lamp and a cup fill only about 15% of a 50 cm round top, so keep most of the table clear. Our wooden table lamps give that layout its centre.
Side table decor ideas start with the size
Guides agree closely on the numbers. We changed the inches to cm.
| What to check | Guide number |
|---|---|
| Height against sofa arm | Within 5 cm of the arm |
| Common table height | 50 to 61 cm |
| Lowest height | Seat cushion level |
| Table width | 41 to 71 cm |
| Table depth | No more than the sofa’s depth |
The first two rows come from Ideal Home. Wayfair gives the width and depth, and Castlery gives the seat cushion limit.
Then comes the rule of three. Livingetc and Parachute both suggest three objects grouped together, and an odd number if you add more. Give each object a job. The lamp gives light, a book or tray gives use, and a stone or small wooden bowl gives calm.
Livingetc also warns against overloading the table. Empty space is part of the design. Castlery adds a useful test: your glass should have a place to sit without a balancing act.
How much of a side table should stay empty?
Take a 50 cm round table, a 17 cm lamp base and a 9 cm cup. The sum uses the area of a circle: 3.14 × half the width × half the width.
- Table top: 3.14 × 25 × 25 = 1,963 sq cm.
- Lamp base: 3.14 × 8.5 × 8.5 = 227 sq cm.
- Cup: 3.14 × 4.5 × 4.5 = 64 sq cm.
- Together: (227 + 64) ÷ 1,963 = 15% of the top.
So 85% is still free, with room for one book and one small object. Next, check the lamp height for the same room.
- Your sofa arm is 60 cm high, so the table should be 55 to 65 cm.
- Seated eye level is about 108 to 134 cm from the floor, as our height of a table lamp guide shows.
- With a 60 cm table, the bottom of the shade should sit 48 to 74 cm above the top.
One more check covers width. A 45 cm shade over a 50 cm table leaves (50 − 45) ÷ 2 = 2.5 cm of table on each side, so a big shade needs a bigger table.
We also counted our own range on 2 Nov 2026. Of our 16 wooden and rattan lamps, 13 stand between 50 and 72 cm, and the middle height is about 61 cm. Of the 14 with one stated shade width, 10 measure 35.5 cm or less. Most of them suit a normal side table.

Living room side table decor: why these rules work
Each number has a reason. A table near the arm height puts your cup under your hand, so you do not lean or stretch. A table much higher than the arm brings the cup near your elbow, so you knock it.
Few objects help the eye as well. Three things make one small group, so the eye rests. Ten things make a heap, so the eye keeps searching.
The lamp rule follows the same logic. The Lighting Research Center, a university team, says to set the bottom of the shade at seated eye level to cut glare. Glare is light that hurts because a bright bulb sits in your view. The shade hides the bulb, so your eyes stay at ease.
Guides differ a little on height. Ideal Home allows a table about 5 cm above the arm when it mainly holds a lamp. Wayfair prefers the table at the arm or just under it. Choose by use. If you rest a cup there, stay at or under the arm. If the lamp is the main job, 5 cm higher is fine.
Bedroom side table decor follows the same three-object idea. Keep a lamp, a book and a place for your water glass.
The science: why a lamp makes wood look warm
Light fades fast with distance. The Open University explains the inverse square law: double the distance, and you get a quarter of the light. A tabletop 30 cm under a shade gets four times the light of a wall 60 cm away. The gap creates the soft pool of light on the table.
Surfaces then send back part of that light. Light reflectance value, or LRV, is the share of light a surface returns, on a 0 to 100 scale. Bright white is about 85. Gustafs, a Swedish wood panel maker, measures walnut at 21.6 and teak at 23.5. Divide: 85 ÷ 21.6 = 3.9 times more light returned by white.
So a walnut table holds the glow and looks deep, while a pale book on it looks bright. Warm 3000K light, like early evening sun, then brings out the red and brown tones in the wood. Kelvin, the K, measures how warm or cool light looks.
Wood grows slowly, and hands finish the story
A lamp on a side table sits close to your hand, so you notice the material. That is why our decorative lamps start with real wood, stone and fibre. Nature gives the wood, after years of growth. Our craftsmen turn, carve and flute it by hand, in our own factory in India, as we have done since 2015. Light then shows the grain. Read our company story for how we started.
Three lamps fit the sums above. Each has an E27 holder, the big screw socket. The bulb is not included, so fit a 3000K warm-white LED.
- The wooden sphere lamp stands 68 cm on a 20 cm real wood ball.
- The fluted wood lamp stands 65 cm with a 45 cm linen shade, so give it a wider table.
- The Sierra turned-wood lamp stands 50 cm with a 32 cm linen shade, which suits a bedroom.

Natural wood and warm light ground a room. Vastu thinking values that kind of harmony, and we leave it there, with no promises of luck.
