Dining Table Direction as per Vastu, and Where the Light Hangs

You are setting up a new home, and the dining table is the last big piece. Before it goes in, someone in the family asks the old question: which way should it face?

The dining table direction as per Vastu is a common worry in Indian homes. Below are the points most Vastu guides agree on and a few sums to fit the light to the table. Then comes the science of warm light at dinner.

Dining table direction as per Vastu: a wood linear light centred over a long dining table

The short answer

For the dining table direction as per Vastu, most guides pick the west or north-west of the home. North and east are good choices too. They ask you to avoid the south. Family members should face east or north while they eat.

Above the table, hang one warm light in the centre, such as a chandelier or a row of pendants. Our category page suggests 75 to 85 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the light.

Dining table position as per Vastu: what the guides say

We read four Indian Vastu guides from builders and property sites. They agree on most points and differ on one.

PointWhat most guides say
Zone of the homeWest or north-west first; north or east also fine; avoid the south
Facing while eatingEast or north; west is acceptable
Head of the familySits facing east
Table shapeSquare or rectangle preferred
Places to avoidUnder a beam, facing the main door, against a toilet wall
LightBright by day; soft, warm light in the evening

One building-material company’s guide puts the dining area in the west or north-west. The same guide asks for “soft and warm lighting” in the evening.

Round dining table Vastu: where guides differ

Two guides say to avoid round or oval tables. A third says round tables “promote unity”, because everyone sits at an equal distance. All of them agree on one thing: avoid odd, irregular shapes and sharp corners.

So a square or rectangular table is the safe choice. A round table is fine if your room needs one. Next, the light has to fit whichever table you pick.

Fitting the light to your Vastu table: the sums

Our dining category page says a 6-seat table is usually 60 to 72 inches long, or about 152 to 183 cm. Take a 180 cm by 90 cm rectangular table.

  1. Light length, at half to two-thirds of the table: 180 ÷ 2 = 90 cm, and 180 × 2 ÷ 3 = 120 cm. So pick a linear light between 90 and 120 cm long.
  2. Light width: the American Lighting Association rule says 12 inches (30.5 cm) narrower than the table’s short side. So 90 − 30.5 = 59.5 cm wide at most.
  3. Now a square 4-seat table, 100 cm by 100 cm. A round light should be no wider than 100 − 30.5 = 69.5 cm.
  4. Height: take a 274 cm (9 ft) ceiling and a 75 cm tall table. A light hung 75 to 85 cm above the top ends 150 to 160 cm from the floor. The gap left for the light and its rod or cable is 114 to 124 cm.

We also sorted our own range by shape. On 29 October 2026, our 82 dining room lights included 22 linear or oval designs and 52 round or centred ones. Eight more came in both shapes. So 30 of 82 (37%) suit a long rectangular table, and 60 of 82 (73%) suit a square or round one.

Dining room Vastu: why the guides point west, east and centre

Vastu links each direction to an element and a feeling. The guides tie the east to health and the morning sun. They call the west and north-west the best zones for the table. These are beliefs, not lab facts, so treat them as a way to plan a calm room.

The placement rules carry plain sense too. A beam over the table feels heavy above your head. A table in line with the main door sits in the path of people walking in. A centred light lands on the food and on every face at the table.

When a rule about dining table direction as per Vastu clashes with your floor plan, keep the parts you can control. You can almost always turn the chairs to face east or north. You can always centre a warm light over the table.

The science of warm light at dinner

Dinner happens in the evening, when your body gets ready for sleep. Harvard Health Publishing reports that blue light held back melatonin, the sleep hormone, about twice as long as green light. Blue light also moved the body clock by 3 hours, against 1.5 hours for green.

Light colour is measured in kelvin, written K. A US energy-saving bulb guide lists warm white at 2200K to 3000K and daylight bulbs at 5000K to 6500K. So a 3000K light over the table matches both the science and the Vastu advice for soft evening light.

Height matters as well. Light from a small source falls off with the square of the distance. Move a bulb from the ceiling, about 200 cm above the plates, down to 80 cm above them. The light on the table then rises by (200 ÷ 80) × (200 ÷ 80) = about 6.25 times. Think of a torch held close to a page and then far away.

The Lighting Research Center adds one more rule. A hanging light should be at least 30 inches (76 cm) above the table, with bulbs shielded from view to cut glare.

Wood, clay and crystal over the table: the JagMag way

Nature gives the material. Wood grows for years, and clay comes from the earth. Human hands shape it. Our craftsmen in our Greater Noida factory have shaped wood, fired clay and linked K9 crystal by hand since 2015.

Light connects. Three of our lights fit the sums above:

  • Wood Linear Chandelier, 150 cm: a wood blade with an acrylic diffuser tube, a built-in 3000K LED and two slim rods. At two-thirds of the table, 150 cm suits a 225 cm table.
  • Ceramic Petal Chandelier, 120 cm: real porcelain leaves on 304-grade stainless steel branches, 40 cm high. The light has 10 G9 holders; bulbs not included, so fit 3000K warm-white LEDs.
  • Surface-Mounted K9 Crystal Chandelier: 25 round or rectangular sizes, with strands about 60 cm deep and a built-in 3000K LED. A rectangular plate suits a rectangular table.

Natural materials ground a room, and warm light calms it. Vastu has always valued this kind of harmony, with no promise of luck. Read more about our makers on our about page.
