Waterproof Wall Light: Will It Rust in the Monsoon?

The rain comes in July. By August, the light beside your main gate has a brown line running down the wall below it.

You bought it as a waterproof wall light. The box said waterproof. The listing said waterproof too.

So why is the frame rusting? And why does the wall below it look stained?

This blog shows you what a waterproof wall light really protects, what the word leaves out, and how to pick an outdoor light that still looks clean after many monsoons.

The short answer

A waterproof rating keeps rain away from the wires and the bulb. The rating says nothing about rust.

A frame stays free of rust only when the frame itself is stainless steel, not painted iron.

So look for two things on every outdoor light: IP65 for the rain, and stainless steel for the frame.

What is really going on: waterproof is not rustproof

Most outdoor lights carry a code like IP65. IP65 is a test score that tells you how well a light keeps out dust and water.

The 6 means dust cannot get inside. The 5 means a jet of water from any side does no harm. Monsoon rain and a garden hose are both covered.

Trusted Reviews explains that the 5 does not mean the light can sit under water. A wall light on a gate pillar never needs that, so IP65 is enough for open rain.

Now the part most listings skip. The IP test checks the seals, not the metal. A light can pass the rain test and still have an iron frame.

Iron and mild steel (the common steel used for gates and grills) rust when water touches the bare metal. Makers paint the frame to cover it.

Paint does not last forever outdoors. A ladder knocks the frame, a screw scratches the corner, or the summer sun cracks the coat. Rain finds the chip, and the brown line starts.

Stainless steel works in a different way. The World Stainless Association says stainless steel is a solid material, not a coating on ordinary steel. A scratch on a stainless frame shows more stainless steel underneath, so there is no iron for the rain to reach.

How to check a waterproof wall light yourself

You do not need a lab. Five quick checks in a shop, or on a listing, tell you most of what you need.

Look for IP65 or higher written on the box or the listing.
Read the material line, and if it only says “metal”, ask whether the frame is iron, aluminium or stainless steel.
Hold a small fridge magnet to the frame, because a magnet sticks hard to iron and mild steel but pulls weakly or not at all on stainless steel.
Ask what the warranty covers, because a 7-day or 30-day replacement window covers a broken arrival, while rust shows up months later.
Ask who will sell you a spare glass panel or bracket if one cracks next year.
