Hanging Lights for Home: How to Choose the Right Size, Height and Material

Cane pendant light with a lotus shade of handwoven cane petals on a black cord, front view on white

The right hanging lights for home do one simple thing. They bring warm light down to where you live. Pick the room first, then the size, then the height. Keep the bottom 75–85 cm above a table or island. Keep 210 cm clear wherever people walk. And keep every bulb 3000K warm white.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide shows you each step, with real pieces from our own Greater Noida factory.

Key takeaways

  • Room first. A dining table, an island and a bedside each need a different light.
  • Size from the room. Use the table’s width, or the room’s length plus width, to pick the shade.
  • Height decides comfort. 75–85 cm over a surface. 210 cm clear over a walkway.
  • Material sets the mood. Glass sparkles, cane throws shadows, stone glows from inside.

What is a hanging light, and is it the same as a pendant light?

Yes. A hanging light and a pendant light are the same thing. It is a light that drops from the ceiling on a wire, rod or chain.

A chandelier hangs too. But a chandelier has many arms or lights. A pendant usually has one shade, or a few shades in a row.

Here’s the thing. A ceiling light lights the whole room from up high. A hanging light picks one spot and makes it feel warm. The dining table. The kitchen counter. The side of your bed.

Which room needs which hanging light?

Start with the job the light must do. Then pick the shape.

What size hanging light do you need?

Size comes from the space under the light, not from the ceiling.

Over a table. For one pendant, a good rule is a shade about half the table’s width. A 90 cm wide table suits a shade about 40–45 cm across. For a long table, hang two or three smaller pendants about 70–80 cm apart.

In a living room. Add the room’s length and width in feet. Use that number in inches as the light’s width. A 12 x 14 ft room suits a light about 26 inches (65 cm) wide.

Beside a bed. Keep it small. A shade 15–25 cm across is enough to read by without crowding the side table.

Want a big piece for a dining table or hall? Our cane pendant light is a 65 cm lotus dome of natural cane petals. Each petal is woven by hand over a matte black 304-grade stainless steel frame. Switch it on and the weave throws soft shadows across the ceiling. E27 holder, bulb not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED.

How high should hanging lights be?

Measure from the floor or the tabletop to the bottom of the light.

  • Over a dining table or island: 75–85 cm above the top. Low enough to light the food, high enough to see across.
  • Where people walk: at least 210 cm (about 7 ft) clear of the floor. Nobody should duck.
  • Beside a bed: about eye level when you sit up to read.

Most of our pendants come on 1.5 m of wire, rod or chain. Your electrician shortens it to the height you want at fitting. So the same light works under a 9 ft ceiling and a 12 ft one. Our pendant light height guide has the numbers for every room.

Which material should your hanging light be?

This is where a hanging light gets its character. Every material does something different when the light comes on.

Glass: clear sparkle or a soft glow

All our glass is borosilicate glass, melted from silica sand, boric oxide, soda ash and alumina. Clear glass lets the light pass clean. Opal glass turns it into an even glow. Smoked glass makes it moody and low.

The ribbed glass ball pendant light is a 20 cm globe of smoked borosilicate glass. The ribs catch the light and break it into soft lines. It sits on a brushed gold stainless steel canopy. See every shape in glass pendant lights.

Cane and rattan: shadows on the wall

Cane comes from the soil. Our craftsmen weave it by hand over a stainless steel ring. Light goes through the weave and throws its pattern on your walls. It feels warm and very Indian in a room full of wood.

For a big room, the rattan hat pendant light is 80 cm wide, woven in three tiers. Browse all cane and rattan pendant lights.

Stone: light from inside

Alabaster is stone formed beneath the earth. A craftsman reads its veins before he cuts. Switch it on and the whole stone glows from inside. No two pieces look the same.

Our alabaster pendant light is a 400 mm cylinder of hand-cut alabaster. A built-in 3000K LED lights it from within. It is IP65, so a bathroom or a covered balcony is fine too.

For a bedside, try the travertine dome pendant light. It is 17 cm of real, hand-honed travertine over an opal borosilicate glass globe.

Wood: grain that comes alive

Wood takes years to grow its grain. Warm light makes that grain look rich and alive. The wood and glass pendant light pairs a 30 cm teak disc with an opal borosilicate glass globe. It suits a kitchen island or a bedside.

Fabric: the softest light of all

Linen and silk shades hide the bulb completely. The light comes through as a calm, even glow. The fabric pendant light has a 45 cm scalloped beige linen shade over a white inner diffuser. See all fabric pendant lights.

Shopping now? For a softer, looser shape, our draped fabric pendant light lets natural-weave fabric fall in long folds to a ruffled hem, 40 cm wide.

One pendant or a row of three?

It depends on the shape below the light.

A round or square table takes one pendant, centred. A long table or a kitchen island takes two or three in a straight line. Space them about 70–80 cm apart, all at the same height.

Want a single long light instead? A linear pendant does the same job. The cylinder pendant light comes 31, 60 or 94 cm tall. It is ribbed clear borosilicate glass with a built-in 3000K LED.

Which bulb and light colour suit a hanging light?

Warm white, 3000K. Always. It makes skin, food, wood and stone look their best. Cool white makes a home feel like an office.

Pendants with a holder (E27, E14 or G9) come without a bulb. Fit a 3000K warm-white LED. Pendants with a built-in LED are 3000K warm white already. None of our lights are dimmable, so a normal switch is all you need.

Do hanging lights suit Vastu thinking?

Vastu looks at how a space, its elements and its light work together. Warm light stands for fire. Stone, wood and cane stand for earth.

We don’t promise luck. But a warm pendant of real stone or cane over your family table makes the room feel grounded. That is the kind of harmony Vastu has always valued.

FAQs

What is the difference between hanging lights and pendant lights?

There is none. Both names mean a light that hangs from the ceiling on a wire, rod or chain. A chandelier also hangs, but it carries many arms or lights.

How high should a hanging light be above a dining table?

Keep the bottom 75–85 cm above the tabletop. That lights the food without blocking the view across the table.

What size hanging light suits a dining table?

For one pendant, pick a shade about half the table’s width. A 90 cm wide table suits a shade about 40–45 cm across.

Can I hang a pendant light from a false ceiling?

Yes, but fix it to the concrete slab above with a hook or threaded rod. The false ceiling board should never carry the weight.

Who installs a hanging light?

Any licensed electrician fits one in 20–30 minutes. We help free on a video call if you need it.
