The lamp still works. The wooden stand still looks good. But the shade has gone dull, one seam has opened, and a corner is bent.
You go back to the seller for a new shade. The listing is gone. The shop says they only sell the full lamp.
So you are told to buy a whole new floor lamp because of one worn shade.
Floor lamp shade replacement does not have to end like that. Below, you will see what to measure, what to ask, and what 20 floor lamp listings told buyers about spare shades.
The short answer
You can replace a floor lamp shade if you know 3 sizes: top width, bottom width and height.
You also need to know how the shade holds on. The shade may sit on a wire harp, screw onto the bulb holder, or clip onto the bulb.
The hard part is a seller who sells the shade alone. Of 20 floor lamp listings we read on 2 Nov 2026, only 1 said the shade could be replaced.
Why floor lamp shade replacement is so hard
By the numbers
- India imported electric table, desk, bedside and floor lamps worth US$26.86 million in 2019 (World Bank WITS trade data).
- In 2024 the same imports were worth US$13.09 million. China sent US$9.71 million of that, or 74.2%.
- A standard 40-foot shipping container holds 67.7 m³ of cargo.
- We read 20 shaded floor lamp listings on 2 Nov 2026. 1 offered a replacement shade. 0 named the shade fitter.
- We make 25 floor lamps, and all 25 pages carry a spare-parts line.
Most floor lamps are sold as one box. The stand, the shade and the wire travel together, and the price is for the set.
An imported lamp adds one more step. The seller fills a shipping container with boxed lamps and pays for the space.
Here is the sum for one tall lamp box of 175 × 50 × 50 cm. 1.75 m × 0.5 m × 0.5 m = 0.44 m³. A 40-foot container holds 67.7 m³. 67.7 ÷ 0.44 = about 154 boxed lamps in one container.
A carton of loose shades takes space that could carry a lamp that sells. Our reading is simple: when space costs money by the cubic metre, spares get left behind. Our listing count fits that reading, with 1 spare shade in 20 listings.
Imports of these lamps have fallen. US$26.86 million in 2019 became US$13.09 million in 2024. (13.09 − 26.86) ÷ 26.86 = a fall of 51% in 5 years.
China’s share moved from 87.6% to 74.2% in the same years. Most imported lamps of this kind still come from one country.
India’s Department of Consumer Affairs opened a Right to Repair portal in December 2022. As of October 2023, the portal covered farm equipment, phones and electronics, consumer durables and car parts. Lamps were not on that list.
So the answer sits with you and your seller. The stand is wood, stone or steel. The shade is cloth. When one part wears out, you should be able to change that part alone.
How to check it yourself
- Measure the old shade: top width, bottom width and height, in cm. Write all 3 down.
- Look inside the top of the shade. Thin wires meeting at a small ring mean a spider fitter, which sits on a harp. A large ring that screws onto the bulb holder is an uno fitter. A shade that clips onto the bulb is a clip-on.
- If your lamp has a harp, the U-shaped wire above the bulb, measure its height. Harps usually come in 6 to 12 inches, or about 15 to 30 cm.
- Match the harp to the shade. The harp should be about 2.5 to 5 cm shorter than the shade is tall.
- Check the width. Floor lamp shades usually look best at 40 to 50 cm across, and always wider than the widest part of the stand.
- Before you buy any lamp, ask the seller in writing: “Will you sell this shade alone, and for how many years?”
A worked example: take a shade 25 cm tall. 25 − 5 = 20 cm, and 25 − 2.5 = 22.5 cm. So the harp should be 20 to 22.5 cm. For a guide to the 3 shade sizes, read how to measure a lamp shade.

What we do at JagMag
JagMag Lights is an Indian decorative lighting maker with its own factory in India, making lights since 2015. We make all 25 of our floor lamps there. Every metal part is 304-grade stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink.
Because we make the parts, we keep them. Our drum shade floor lamp page says it plainly: “We make every part ourselves, so a worn shade never means a new lamp.” We keep spare parts for 10+ years. We also sell 33 parts on their own, from spare glass shades to stone balls.

Take our fluted wooden floor lamp. The lamp stands 160 cm tall. The natural linen shade is 55 cm across, and the base is 34 cm. 55 ÷ 34 = 1.6, so the shade is 1.6 times wider than the base. The lamp takes one E27 bulb, not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED.
The wood column, the linen shade and the steel frame are made by our own team in our own factory, work we have done for 11 years since 2015. A floor lamp shade replacement from us is the same part, made by the same hands. Wood and warm light also sit well with Vastu thinking, which values natural materials and a calm, well-lit room.
In-stock lamps ship in 4 working days. A custom size or finish takes 15–20 working days. Our lifetime rust warranty covers the stainless steel parts, as clause 4.1A of our Legal Policies explains.

FAQs
Can I get a floor lamp shade replacement without buying a new lamp?
Yes, a floor lamp shade replacement works if you match the 3 sizes and the fitter of the old shade. Supply is the catch. Of 20 floor lamp listings we read on 2 Nov 2026, only 1 offered a replacement shade, so ask before you buy.
What size shade does a floor lamp need?
Most floor lamps look best with a shade 40 to 50 cm across. The shade should also be wider than the widest part of the stand.
What is a spider fitter on a lamp shade?
A spider fitter is 3 or 4 thin wires that meet at a small ring at the top of the shade. The ring sits on a harp and a small top screw, called a finial, holds it in place.
How do I measure a floor lamp shade for replacement?
Measure 3 things in cm: the width across the top, the width across the bottom, and the height along the side. Then check the fitter. If there is a harp, it should be 2.5 to 5 cm shorter than the shade.
Does JagMag sell replacement shades for its floor lamps?
Yes. JagMag Lights keeps spare parts for 10+ years for the lights it makes. All 25 of our floor lamp pages carry a spare-parts line, so a worn shade does not mean a new lamp.
Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Light brings it to life. That is JagMag.
