You walk into a duplex and look up. Two floors of air. A balcony on one side, tall windows on the other. And right in the middle, either a light that holds the whole space together, or an empty void that feels unfinished every evening.
A double-height living room is the one room where a small light does not work. It needs a chandelier that is long, tall and seen from both floors. Here is how to choose one, in plain words.
The short answer
For a double height living room, choose a long, vertical chandelier, not a wide flat one. In a ceiling of 17 to 20 feet, most homes need a chandelier 6 to 10 feet tall, hanging so its bottom sits about 8 to 9 feet above the floor. That puts the light in the middle of the void, where people see it from the sofa and from the upstairs balcony. Pick warm 3000K light, plan the ceiling point before the false ceiling goes up, and think about cleaning before you fall in love with a design.
Why a double-height room needs a different chandelier
In a normal 10-foot room, a chandelier hangs close to the ceiling and lights the table or sofa below. In a duplex hall, that same light would sit 18 feet up. It would look like a button on the ceiling, and the room would stay dark where people sit.
So the rules change. A chandelier for a high ceiling living room has to do three jobs:
- Fill the height. It should travel down into the void, so the space between the two floors feels furnished, not empty.
- Look good from above. Upstairs, people look down on it. The top of the chandelier and its canopy are on show.
- Bring light down. The glow has to reach the people below, not just the ceiling.
That is why long, cascading shapes work best: crystal raindrops, strands of glass globes, columns of stone.
What size chandelier for a double height ceiling?
Use two numbers: the drop (how tall it is) and the width.
How tall should it be?
Keep at least 8 feet (about 240 cm) clear between the floor and the bottom of the chandelier where people walk under it. Above a coffee table or a centre rug, you can go a little lower. Then fill the space above with the chandelier itself.
| Ceiling height | Chandelier height | Bottom of chandelier above floor |
|---|---|---|
| 16 ft (about 4.9 m) | 5–7 ft | 8–9 ft |
| 18 ft (about 5.5 m) | 6–8 ft | 8–9 ft |
| 20 ft (about 6.1 m) | 8–10 ft | 8–10 ft |
| 24 ft and above | 10–16 ft | 9–10 ft |
How wide should it be?
A simple rule: add the room’s length and width in feet. Use that number in inches as the chandelier’s width. A 16 × 20 ft hall gives 36 inches, so a chandelier about 3 feet wide. In a tall void, you can go slightly wider, because height makes everything look smaller.

Which style suits a duplex house?
The material decides how the void feels at night. Here are the four we see work best in Indian duplex homes.
K9 crystal raindrops: for sparkle
A column of K9 crystal raindrops catches light from every angle, so it sparkles from the sofa and from the stairs. Our long crystal chandelier comes in six sizes, from 6 to 16 feet tall, on a 304 stainless steel canopy. The raindrop chandelier has the same range of drops in a gold finish. For a very tall void of 12 feet and more, the spiral raindrop chandelier goes up to 20 feet and has a built-in 3000K LED, so there are no bulbs to change up high.

Modern double height chandelier: crystal and glass
Want something modern, not classic? Look for a sculptural shape. The crystal vine chandelier is a satin gold 304 stainless steel spiral with marquise borosilicate glass leaves and crystal globes. It hangs 2.4 m as standard and up to 3.6 m.

The leaf chandelier is softer: white ceramic ginkgo leaves on brass-finish stainless steel, falling up to 250 cm. And the pearl chandelier drapes opal borosilicate glass orbs on gold cords, like jewellery hung across the void.
Alabaster: for a warm, calm glow
Alabaster is stone formed beneath the earth. Our craftsmen cut each piece and read its veins before they shape it. Switch it on and the stone glows from inside. In a double-height room, a cluster of alabaster lights at different heights feels calm, not showy.

The ribbed alabaster chandelier is 300 cm tall overall. The alabaster staircase chandelier reaches 350 cm. For a grand duplex hall, the round alabaster cascade chandelier has 22 lights on a 91.5 cm canopy, 12 feet tall in all. Each one has a built-in 3000K LED. Browse more in alabaster lighting.
Tiered crystal: for a classic hall
If your home has mouldings, columns or a grand staircase, a tiered crystal design fits the mood. The crystal foyer chandelier has 18 lights and adjusts from 6 to 12 feet tall. The crystal chandelier for staircase comes as large as 6 feet wide and 20 feet tall for the biggest voids.
Built-in LED or bulbs: think about the ladder
Here is the thing most people forget. In a 20-foot ceiling, changing a bulb is not a two-minute job. You need a tall ladder or scaffolding.
- Built-in LED. No bulbs to change. Our integrated LEDs are 3000K warm white and carry a 1-year warranty on the LED module. Best for the tallest voids.
- Bulb holders (GU10, G9, E27). You can choose and replace bulbs yourself. Bulbs are not included; fit 3000K warm-white LEDs, which last for years.
Either way, our lights are not dimmable. For a softer mood late at night, add wall lights or one of our floor lamps for living room on a separate switch.
Plan the ceiling before the false ceiling
A long chandelier can weigh 15 to 30 kg. Plan it early.
- Fix a hook in the RCC slab at the exact centre of the void, before the false ceiling is closed.
- Run the wire and a separate switch to that point. A switch on both floors is handy.
- Measure from the floor, not the ceiling. Decide where the bottom should sit, then order the drop.
- Keep it clear of the stairs and balcony rail. Leave at least 60 cm all around, so nobody can touch it.
Every metal part we make is 304-grade stainless steel, with a lifetime warranty against rusting. We keep spares for 10+ years: one crystal, one globe, one arm. Shipping is free across India, and EMI is available.
A note on light and harmony
Indian homes have long thought about light and space together. Vastu values warm light, natural materials and a space that feels open, not cluttered. A long chandelier in warm 3000K light fills a tall void with a soft glow, while the floor below stays free for the family. Not a promise of luck. Just a room that feels right to come home to.
FAQs
Which chandelier is best for a double height living room?
A long, vertical chandelier is best. Choose a crystal raindrop column, a cascade of glass globes or a cluster of alabaster lights, 6 to 10 feet tall for a 17–20 foot ceiling. Hang it so the bottom sits about 8 to 9 feet above the floor.
Duplex house ke liye jhumar kaun sa lein?
Duplex ghar ke liye lamba (long) jhumar lein, chauda aur chapta nahi. 18–20 feet ki chhat mein 6–10 feet lamba K9 crystal ya alabaster jhumar sahi rehta hai. Neeche se 8–9 feet ki doori rakhein. In English: for a duplex jhumar, pick a long, cascading design, not a wide flat one.
How high should a chandelier hang in a duplex house?
Keep the bottom at least 8 feet (about 240 cm) above the floor where people walk. Over a coffee table or a rug you can go a little lower. The middle of the chandelier should sit roughly in line with the upper floor, so it looks good from both levels.
How do I clean a chandelier on a high ceiling?
Plan for it once or twice a year. Use a tall ladder or a mobile scaffold, switch off the power, and wipe crystals or glass with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. A built-in LED model saves you extra trips up to change bulbs.
Can you make a chandelier to fit my ceiling height?
Yes. Send us your ceiling height and floor size on WhatsApp. We make the drop, width and finish to suit, in 15–20 working days from our Greater Noida factory.
Is a long chandelier safe on a false ceiling?
Only if it hangs from a hook fixed in the concrete slab above. Never hang a heavy chandelier from the false ceiling board itself. Your electrician can fit the hook and wire before the false ceiling is closed.
Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Light brings it to life.
