Cane chairs, plants in clay pots, a block-print throw and a woven light overhead. Boho interior design feels relaxed, like a room that grew over years of travel and collecting. Many Indian homes already hold half of it.
Below you will learn what boho means, the few elements that make it work, and why a woven cane or rattan light is its signature. You will also see the simple sums behind the patterned shadows on your wall.

The short answer
Boho interior design is a relaxed, layered style built on natural materials, plants, mixed textiles and warm, low light. Start with a calm base of cream or beige, add cane, wood and cotton, and hang one woven pendant with a 3000K warm bulb. Plan about 150 lux for a living room.
Boho interior design: where it came from and what it uses
The word has a long story. Etymonline says French speakers used “bohémien” from the 15th century to mean a Roma traveller. By 1834 the French word also meant an artist living a free, unconventional life. Henri Murger’s stories of poor Paris artists, published in 1847–49 per Britannica, made that meaning popular.
Bohemian interior design took that spirit indoors. MasterClass describes the style as playful colours, textures and patterns, with layered textiles and art from many cultures. Furniture sits low and uses natural materials, and rattan chairs are a staple.
Asian Paints Beautiful Homes adapts it for Indian living rooms. Use low furniture in wood and rattan. Add textiles for layers. Bring in plants. Choose soft, warm light. Let off-whites, creams, beiges and browns act as the canvas.
Woven hanging lights tie the look together. Light passes through the weave and paints the room with pattern.
Rattan itself is a climbing palm. The FAO counts about 600 species in 13 groups, called genera. Unlike bamboo, rattan is solid, not hollow. Cane is the glossy outer layer, cut into strips for weaving. In Assam, the Ministry of Culture’s IGNCA notes three cane species used in commercial amounts.
How big is the shadow from a rattan pendant?
The pattern on your wall follows simple geometry. Work through the sums below.
- Pick a 60 cm rattan shade. The bulb sits in the centre, so the weave is 30 cm from the bulb.
- Say the nearest wall is 150 cm from the bulb.
- Shadow growth: 150 ÷ 30 = 5. Every gap in the weave shows up 5 times bigger on the wall.
- So a 1 cm gap between rods makes a band of light about 5 cm wide.
- Move the light to 300 cm from the wall: 300 ÷ 30 = 10. The pattern grows twice as large, and softer.
- Room light: a 3.6 m × 4.2 m living room is 15.12 m². IS 3646 sets 150 lux for a lounge. 15.12 × 150 = 2,268 lumens in total.
A lux is the light on one square metre. A lumen is the total light a bulb gives out, like water from a tap. One pendant rarely gives 2,268 lumens alone, so add a lamp or two for the corners.
Our own count, taken on 1 November 2026: we make 19 cane and rattan pendant lights. Eighteen of them, or 95%, carry boho or bohemian in their style notes. Shade sizes run from 25 cm to 109 cm across, and every one takes a standard E27 bulb.

Why a woven light makes boho work
The logic runs step by step. Boho rooms are full of texture. Flat, even light hides texture. Light broken by a weave creates its own texture, so the light becomes part of the decor.
Physics explains the pattern. The University of Illinois Physics Van describes two parts of a shadow. The umbra is the dark core where all light is blocked. The penumbra is the soft edge around it, which appears when the light source is larger than a point.
A clear bulb is a small source, so it draws sharp lines. CU Boulder’s physics demos show the same: a point source casts sharp shadows, and a frosted bulb gives soft edges. Choose a clear 3000K LED bulb for crisp patterns and a frosted one for a gentle glow.
Distance changes the size. Science Buddies explains that an object closer to the light casts a larger shadow. A wide shade puts the weave farther from the bulb, so its pattern stays smaller and finer.
Natural fibre also breathes. The German insurers’ cargo guide TIS-GDV says cane absorbs moisture readily, with a normal water content of 10–12%. A 2022 study in the journal Forests found rattan reached about 27% moisture at 95% humidity. 27 ÷ 11 = about 2.5 times the normal level. Keep woven lights away from steam and constant damp, such as an open bathroom.
A boho style living room or a boho bedroom follows the same rule. Fewer, warmer lights beat many bright ones. Guides differ on how much to layer; start with one pendant, a lamp and plants, then add only what you love.
The JagMag way: nature, hands, light
Nature gives the material. Human hands shape it. Light connects it to your evening. Boho asks for exactly that: real fibre, visible handwork and warm light.
The Rattan Sunburst Pendant Light is 60 cm wide and 20 cm tall. Natural rattan rods form a two-tier brim around a central cone, and its rings are bound by hand.
The Rattan Globe Pendant Light comes in 40, 50 or 60 cm. Its rounded shade of open radial rods suits a boho bedroom.
The Rattan Hat Pendant Light spans 70 cm with a cream inner diffuser. The diffuser softens the bulb, so the pattern stays gentle over a dining table.

Each one hangs on 1.5 m as standard. Bulb not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED. Our craftsmen bend, bind and weave every shade by hand in our own factory in India, as we have since 2015. Check our certifications. In Vastu thinking, natural fibre brings the earth element and warm light brings fire. We see that as harmony, not luck.
FAQs
What is boho interior design in simple words?
Boho interior design is a relaxed style that layers natural materials, plants, patterned textiles and warm light. The style takes its spirit from the free-living artists of 19th-century Paris.
What is the difference between boho and bohemian?
Boho is simply the short form of bohemian. Both names describe one layered, natural style.
What colours are used in bohemian interior design?
Start with off-white, cream, beige and brown as the base, as Asian Paints suggests. Add stronger colour through cushions, rugs and art; our raw silk and cane pendant comes in rust-red and deep blue.
Which light suits boho bedroom ideas?
A woven rattan or cane pendant with a 3000K warm bulb suits a boho bedroom best. Plan about 100 lux, the general bedroom level in IS 3646.
Can a rattan light go in a bathroom?
Avoid it. Rattan absorbs moisture and can reach about 27% water content at 95% humidity, which invites mould. Use it in dry rooms.
