Glass Hanging Lamp – Calypso Clear Bell and Opal Globe Pendant Light, 18 cm

Some lights fill a room. This one fills the space above your table. The Calypso is a glass hanging lamp with a clear bell outside and a soft white globe inside, so the glow is warm and the bulb stays hidden.

It is two pieces of glass, one inside the other. The outer bell is clear borosilicate glass, 18 cm wide and 29 cm tall with its cap. Inside it, high under the cap, sits a round globe of opal borosilicate glass. The globe rests to one side of the bell, not dead centre. From across the room it looks like a moon caught in clear glass.

Borosilicate glass, clear and opal

Glass starts as earth: silica sand, boric oxide, soda ash and alumina, melted together. We use borosilicate glass for its clarity and purity. The bell stays clear. For the globe, white goes in while the glass is made, and it becomes opal glass.

Then come the hands. Both pieces are hand-blown, so every bell and globe differs a little from the next. Our craftsman seats the globe under the cap and sets the bell around it, so the clear rim falls well below the opal.

Switch it on and the opal globe glows first, soft and even, with no hot spot. The clear bell catches that light and gives the whole shade a quiet shine.

Where a glass hanging lamp works best

Over a dining table. One suits a small round table. Three in a row light a long one, as in our photos. The warm glow turns a weekday dinner into an evening.

Over a kitchen island. It gives focused light to prep and cook by, without the shadows that ceiling downlights leave. Hang two to five in a row along a long bench.

Beside the bed. One on each side frees the nightstand for a book and a glass of water.

In a hallway. A single lamp greets your guests with warm light the moment they walk in.

Light, fitting and finish

The ceiling canopy and the cap on the glass are 304-grade stainless steel with a matte black finish. Steel like this does not rust, and it comes with a lifetime warranty against rusting on orders from 4 October 2026.

The round canopy is 10 cm wide and 2.5 cm deep. The shade hangs on a black cord of up to 120 cm. Your electrician shortens it to suit your ceiling; rooms above 3 m can use more of the drop.

It takes one E27 bulb. The bulb is not included. Fit a 3000K warm-white LED of 6–10 W: bright enough to cook by, soft enough for a long dinner. Warm white flatters faces and food. This light is not dimmable. It is IP20, made for indoor rooms, and runs on 220–240 V.
