Glass Ball Lamp: How to Choose the Right Globe Light for Your Home

How to choose a glass ball lamp: which borosilicate glass gives which glow, pendant, table, wall or floor globes, and the right size for each room.

Some lights fill a room. A glass ball lamp does something quieter. It hangs, sits or rests on the wall like a small moon, and the whole corner turns soft and warm.

That is why the globe light has stayed in Indian homes for so long. It suits a bedside, a dining table, a hall wall and a reading corner alike. But the wrong glass or the wrong size can make it glare, or look lost.

Here is how to pick the right one, in plain words.

The short answer

Choose the glass first, then the place, then the size. Opal glass hides the bulb and glows evenly; clear glass gives brighter, sharper light. Hang a globe over a table or bed, fix it on a wall in a passage, or stand a cluster of spheres in an empty corner. Use a 3000K warm-white bulb and the ball glows like a lantern.

What is a glass ball lamp?

A glass ball lamp is any light whose bulb sits inside a round globe of glass. The globe can hang from the ceiling, sit on a table base, stand on a floor stem or rest on a wall plate. The round shape spreads light in every direction, so there is no hard edge and no bright spot.

At JagMag, every globe is borosilicate glass. It is melted from silica sand, boric oxide, soda ash and alumina, then blown by hand into a round shape in our Greater Noida factory. No two globes are exactly alike, because a person shaped each one.

Which glass gives which glow?

The glass decides the mood of the room. Here are the four kinds we make.

  • Opal borosilicate glass. White is added while the glass is made. The ball glows evenly and hides the bulb. It is the same glass people call milk, frosted or white glass. Best for bedrooms and anywhere you look straight at the light.
  • Clear borosilicate glass. Nothing is added. You see the bulb, and the light falls clean and bright. Good over a dining table or a kitchen counter.
  • Smoked borosilicate glass. Smoke colour is added. The light is softer and moodier, and the globe looks rich even when it is switched off.
  • Amber, gold-lustre and coloured glass. Colour is added. The light turns honey-warm. One amber globe in a dark corner feels like evening at home.

Not sure? Choose opal. It is the easiest glass to live with, and it never shows a bare bulb.

Pendant, table, wall or floor: which glass ball lamp do you need?

Hanging globe lights for a table, bed or counter

Hanging globe lights work best over a spot where nobody walks: a dining table, a kitchen island or the side of a bed. For a bedside, a 15 cm globe is enough. The Glass Globe Pendant Light – Bola hangs one opal ball on a slim chrome-finish stem, and glows warm with no glare.

Want colour? The Globe Hanging Light is ribbed, hand-blown glass in blue, pink, brown, gold-lustre or smoked. Hang three at different heights over a dining table and you have an orb pendant light cluster that looks made for your room.

Hang the bottom of the globe 75–85 cm above a dining table. Where people walk under it, keep 210 cm clear of the floor. Every JagMag pendant comes on 1.5 m of wire as standard, cut to your height when it is fitted. See all our glass pendant lights.

A glass ball table lamp for a bedside or desk

On a bedside table, a glass ball lamp gives you light to read by without waking up the whole room. The Marble Table Lamp with Opal Glass Globe sets an opal ball on a brass-finish arm over a solid marble base. Stone below, glass above. At 34 cm tall, it sits below eye level beside most beds.

For a rounder, softer look, the Taupe Table Lamp with White Globe is 42 cm tall, with an opal globe and an inline switch. Browse all table lamps.

A glass ball wall light for halls, passages and bedrooms

A wall light frees up your bedside table and lights a passage without a ceiling point. Our best-loved one is the Globe Wall Light: a 15 cm hand-blown opal ball resting on a folded brushed-gold base of 304-grade stainless steel. It takes one G9 bulb, not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED.

For a touch of colour, the Red Round Wall Light sets a 12 cm opal glass ball on a round red base. Fix most wall lights 165–180 cm from the floor. Beside a bed, fix them at eye level when you sit up to read. More ideas in our indoor wall lights.

A floor lamp with glass spheres for an empty corner

A bare corner beside the sofa is the perfect home for a globe floor lamp. Many of our floor lamps for living room are built this way. The Modern White Floor Lamp is a chrome floor lamp with seven opal borosilicate glass spheres on a 161 cm stem. The Bubble Floor Lamp holds twelve amber globes on polished chrome, 157.5 cm tall, and fills a corner with honey-coloured light. Both take G9 bulbs, not included. See all floor lamps.

A chandelier with glass balls for the hall or dining room

When one globe is not enough, gather them. A chandelier with glass balls spreads soft light across a big room, without the sharp sparkle of crystal. The Sputnik Chandelier for Living Room holds 18 opal globes on a 110 cm brass-finish frame. For a cleaner look, the Black Globe Chandelier sets six opal globes on an 82 cm matte-black ring. What size glass ball do you need?

Size matters more than style. A globe that is too small looks lost; one that is too big crowds the room.

Why a JagMag glass ball lamp lasts

A globe light should glow the same way in ten years. Here is how we make sure it does.

  • Real borosilicate glass. Blown by hand, it stays clear for life and handles a bulb’s heat without clouding.
  • 304-grade stainless steel. Every metal part, in gold, brass, chrome or black finish, with a lifetime warranty against rust on those parts (orders from 4 October 2026).
  • Spare globes for 10+ years. Break one ball and we still have it. Our lighting components range sells single glass balls, from a 150 mm gold-amber glass ball lamp shade and a 5 inch gold glass ball with deep spiked dimples, to a 6 inch blue marbled glass ball for chandelier and a 5 inch orange glass ball for chandelier. Want a softer, cloudier glow? Try a 6 inch smoke glass globe, white opal borosilicate glass with grey smoke swirling through it.
  • Made in our own factory. Greater Noida, since 2015. A custom size or finish takes 15–20 working days; importers take 60–120.

FAQs

Which glass is best for a glass ball lamp?

Opal borosilicate glass suits most homes. It hides the bulb and spreads an even, glare-free glow. Pick clear glass for brighter light over a table, and amber or smoked glass for a warm, moody corner.

What bulb goes in a glass ball lamp?

Use a 3000K warm-white LED in the holder the lamp names, such as G9, E14 or E27. Our holder lights come without a bulb. Warm 3000K light makes an opal globe glow like a lantern, not like a tube light.

Are hanging globe lights good for a low ceiling?

Yes, over a table, bed or counter where nobody walks underneath. Keep the bottom of the globe 75–85 cm above the table. Over a walkway, keep 210 cm clear of the floor, or choose a glass ball wall light instead.

What is an orb pendant light?

An orb pendant light is another name for a globe pendant: a round glass ball hung from the ceiling on a wire, rod or chain. Ours are hand-blown borosilicate glass in opal, clear, smoked, amber and other colours.

Can I replace a broken glass ball?

Yes. We keep spare globes for 10+ years, and our lighting components range sells single borosilicate glass balls for chandeliers, pendants and lamps. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will match the size and fitting.

How do I clean a glass ball lamp?

Switch it off and let it cool. Wipe the globe with a soft cloth dipped in mild soapy water, then dry it. On a pendant, hold the globe with one hand as you wipe, so it does not swing.

Are glass ball lights bright enough to light a whole room?

One glass ball light gives a soft, all-round glow, right for a bedside, a corner or a small table. To light a whole room, use a chandelier with several glass balls, or pair one pendant with two wall lights. Opal borosilicate glass softens the bulb; clear borosilicate glass shows it.

Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Light brings it to life.
