Smoke Glass Globe – 6 Inch Round Shade and Chandelier Component

One cracked globe should not mean a whole new light. This smoke glass globe replaces the shade that broke, or gives a tired chandelier, pendant or lamp a softer face.

It is a 6 inch (about 15 cm) round glass globe, hollow, with one open top for the holder. The glass is white opal, with grey smoke drifting through it like a cloud. Find more single globes and shades in our chandelier parts and lighting components range.

What is this glass globe made of?

Borosilicate glass, the same glass we use across every JagMag light. It is melted from natural raw ingredients: silica sand, boric oxide, soda ash and alumina.

White colour goes in to make the glass opal. Smoke colour goes in for the swirls. Both are added while the glass is being made. Then a craftsman blows the globe by hand and lets the smoke settle where it wants. He does not try to make it even. That is why no two globes match.

The smoke sits inside the glass. It is not painted or sprayed on, so it cannot peel or fade. Borosilicate glass also handles the heat of a lamp better than ordinary glass, which suits a light you switch on every evening.

What does the light do with it?

Off, the globe is a small piece of art. The glossy surface catches the room light, and the grey swirls read like marble from across the hall.

On, the bulb disappears. You see one soft, cloudy glow, lighter where the smoke runs thin and deeper where it gathers. With a 3000K warm-white bulb in your fitting, the white turns warm and the smoke turns calm.

Which lights does a 6 inch smoke glass globe fit?

• Chandeliers and jhumars: replace one cracked or plain globe, or fit a set across every arm. The smoke quiets each bulb, so the frame takes centre stage.
• Single pendants: one round glass globe on a globe-type holder gives a soft, diffused pool of light.
• Wall lights: any wall light whose holder takes a round open-top globe.
• Table and floor lamps: fit it onto a globe-style lamp base when the old shade is missing or looks dated.

The open end slides over the holder, and the fitting’s own locking ring or grub screw holds it. On chandeliers with push-fit holders, it presses on and holds by friction. Not sure about yours? Smoke grey sits naturally with aged brass and antique gold frames on vintage jhumars. It looks just as good on matte black frames, in calm black, white and grey schemes, and in layered, mixed-material interiors. Against a bright all-white Scandinavian scheme it reads darker, so it shines where there is good daylight. Every JagMag frame in these finishes is 304-grade stainless steel. The globe is made for indoor fixtures only.
