Rope Pendant Light – Raffia Paper Rope, Scalloped 50 cm

Some lights fill a room with light. This rope pendant light fills it with texture.

Two scalloped tiers of raffia paper rope, wound row after row over a frame, 50 cm across. Switch it on and the light pushes through the gaps between the cords. You get a warm glow above and a soft, striped pattern below.

Why the gaps in this rope shade matter

Look at the lit photo. The rope isn’t packed tight. There’s a deliberate space between each wrap.

That’s what makes this shade work. A solid shade blocks light and throws it straight down. This one lets it leak sideways too, so the ceiling and the walls pick up a warm wash instead of going dark.

The result is a room that feels lit, not spot-lit.

Raffia paper rope: natural fibre, wound by hand

Raffia paper rope belongs to our fibre and natural paper family: paper fibre twisted tight into cord. It is not plastic wicker. Up close you can see tiny loose strands. That’s the handmade texture, not the flat shine of moulded plastic.

Our craftsman winds the rope one row at a time over the frame. He keeps the gap even, then wraps the wavy edge of each tier so the scallop holds its shape. Light then does the rest: it slips through the weave and shows every cord.

The colour is a warm sandy brown. It sits well against cream, white, terracotta or wood. If your room is full of hard surfaces, like glass, marble or polished tile, this is the piece that softens it.

What size rope pendant light for a dining table?

At 50 cm wide it’s a proper table light, not an accent. Hang one over a four to six seater and it covers the table.

It’s only 23 cm tall, with the lower tier taking 9 cm of that. So it doesn’t hang down into your sightline. A tall shade at eye level blocks the person opposite you.

Light and fitting: steel that will not rust

The ceiling canopy and the fittings are 304-grade stainless steel in a matte black finish. They carry a lifetime warranty against rusting on orders from 4 October 2026 (Legal Policies 4.1A).

It hangs on a black cord, 1.5 m long, that your electrician shortens at installation. It takes one E27 bulb. The bulb is not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED. An LED stays cool, which is kind to a paper-fibre shade.

It runs on 220–240V, is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms, and is not dimmable.

A word on cleaning a paper rope shade

Paper rope is not fabric. Don’t wet it.

Dust it with a dry, soft brush or the brush head on your vacuum, on low. Keep it out of bathrooms, covered balconies and steamy kitchens. Damp is what shortens the life of a paper-fibre shade.
