Overview
Some lights ask you to look at them. This one asks you to sit down. Switch it on and the whole lantern turns into a soft, warm box of light over your table.
This lantern pendant light is built like a small piece of joinery. Four tapered wood posts meet at cross-lap joints that stand slightly proud at every corner. Paper panels sit between them. It is 35 cm wide and 40 cm tall, a Japanese-style lantern for a Japandi, zen or warm-minimalist home. If you want a Japandi pendant light that is real wood and real paper, joined by hand, this is it.
Natural wood and paper, joined by hand
Wood is grown, not moulded. It takes years to build its grain. Paper comes from plant fibre, pressed thin enough for light to pass through.
Our craftsman cuts each post, notches it, and fits the cross-lap joints so the corners are visibly assembled rather than hidden. The frame tapers inward at the top, so it takes up less visual space than a straight box of the same width. Up close, it reads as furniture, not a shade.
Look closely at the panels and you can see the fibres flecked through the paper. Lit, they glow warm amber-cream and the wood frame turns into clean dark lines across the light. A little light spills down through the open base onto the table.
Where a wood lantern pendant light works best
- Over a dining table: at 35 cm it gives a calm, even pool of light without shouting for attention. Hang the base 75 to 85 cm above the table.
- Bedside or reading corner: the panels hide the bulb completely, so nothing glares when you look up from a book.
- Tea room or meditation corner: the exposed joinery and paper panels suit a deliberately quiet, uncluttered space. Hang two side by side over a low tea table.
- Living room or hallway: a warm, architectural shape for a spot that usually gets a plain fitting. Keep at least 7 ft of clear headroom below it.
It flatters oak and walnut furniture, cane, linen, paper screens and stone. It suits Japandi, zen, wabi-sabi, Scandinavian and warm-minimalist rooms. Skip it beside high-gloss chrome or ornate crystal fixtures.
Light, fitting and the steel inside
It takes one E27 bulb, up to 60 W. The bulb is not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED for the warm glow you see in the photos. This light is not dimmable. It gives a fixed warm light.
It hangs on a slim black cord, 1.5 m as standard, shortened at installation. It runs on 220–240 V and is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms. Keep wood and paper out of bathrooms and outdoors.
Every metal part we make for it, such as the ceiling canopy and fixings, is 304-grade stainless steel. Stainless steel does not rust, and it carries a lifetime warranty against rusting on orders from 4 October 2026.
It suits rooms of 8 × 8 ft and up, with a ceiling of at least 8 ft. Any licensed electrician fits it to a standard ceiling point in 20–30 minutes, and we give free video-call support while they do.
