Vocal for Local Products: 5 Questions Before You Buy

Diwali is close. You want a new light for the hall, and you want vocal for local products in your home this year. You scroll, and a pendant catches your eye. The brand name sounds Indian. The photo looks warm.

The order arrives. You turn the box over. In small print, the label names an importer and a country far from here.

Nobody lied to you. You simply read the name, not the label. An easy mistake, especially in the festive rush.

The fix takes five minutes and needs no expert. You only need to know where to look and what to ask.

Below are five plain questions. Ask them before you buy any light, and you will know who made it and who will stand behind it.

The short answer

Vocal for local products are things made in India by makers you can name and reach. A brand name alone does not tell you where a light was made. Read the Country of Origin line and the name on the box, then ask about material, spare parts and warranty, and you will know in five minutes.

What makes vocal for local products truly local

On 12 May 2020, the Prime Minister asked the country to be “vocal about the local products” and help them “become global”. Since then, many shoppers look for Indian goods first. Vocal for local products are now a real choice in home decor, lights included.

A name is not a place. A brand can have an Indian name and sell lights made in another country. A brand can also have an English name and make every piece in India.

Lighting is a big import category. Trade data on TrendEconomy shows that India imported lamps and lighting fittings worth about US$462 million in 2023. China supplied 78% of that value.

Imports are legal, and many imported lights are well made. The point is simple. You deserve to know where your light came from, so you can choose.

The law already helps you. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 ask online sellers to show the country of origin of goods. For packed goods, the Legal Metrology rules ask for the name and address of the maker or importer on the label, plus the country of origin for imported goods.

So two answers are already printed for you. The other three come from asking the seller.

Those three matter most over time. A light stays on your ceiling for ten years or more. In that time, a glass shade may crack, or a holder may wear out after many bulb changes.

When the maker is in India, the new part can come from the same factory that built your light. When the maker is abroad, the part has to travel the same long road as the light did, if the part exists at all.

How to check before you buy

  1. Read the “Country of Origin” line on the listing before you pay.
  2. Read whose name and address is on the box, and see if it says maker or importer.
  3. Read the material line, and ask what the metal parts are made of.
  4. Ask who keeps spare parts for this light, and for how many years.
  5. Ask for the warranty in writing, and ask what it covers.

If the seller cannot answer the last three, you have learned something useful. A maker knows the material, keeps the parts and writes the warranty, because the maker built the light.

Where the other side is better

Imported lights give you a huge range of designs, and many sit in stock for quick delivery. A good importer also gives a proper warranty. Made abroad does not mean badly made.

If you need fifty matching pieces by next week, a large importer with stock may serve you faster than any maker who has to build them.

What we do at JagMag

JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, making lights since 2015. Every light we sell is made in our own factory. We are a DPIIT-recognised startup, and our certifications page shows our ZED certificate. The same page states that our products and spare parts are CE and UL certified.

When you call us, you talk to the people who made your light. We know the stone, the steel and the wire inside it, because we chose them.

Take our alabaster up and down wall light. Alabaster is a soft stone formed beneath the earth. A craftsman in our factory reads each block, veins and all, then carves and polishes the two scoops by hand. No two pieces match.

The backplate is 304 stainless steel, the same grade used in a good kitchen sink. The steel has a lifetime warranty against rust, in section 4.1A of our legal policies. Spare parts stay available for 10+ years, because we made the light and we keep the parts.

In-stock pieces leave our factory within 4 working days. A custom size or finish takes 15 to 20 days. Natural stone and warm light also bring the calm, grounded feeling that Vastu thinking has always valued.
