How to Hang Pendant Light Over a Dining Table: Height and Gaps

Two travertine mini pendant lights hanging over a wooden dining table by a sunlit window

The new pendant has arrived. Your electrician stands on a ladder above the dining table with 1.5 m of cord. Then comes one question: how low should it hang?

Knowing how to hang pendant light over a dining table saves you a second visit. Most of the job is a few measurements, and you can do them before the electrician arrives.

Below are the guide heights and gaps, the sums for an Indian dining room, and the physics of a few centimetres.

The short answer

Hang the bottom of the shade 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop. Centre the pendant over the table, not over the ceiling point. For two or three pendants, keep them 60 to 75 cm apart, centre to centre. Set the end ones about 30 cm in from the table edge. Your electrician shortens the cord inside the canopy.

Pendant light installation: the numbers guides use

Our own dining pendant page gives 75 to 85 cm from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade. Crate and Barrel’s guide starts at 30 inches, about 76 cm, above the table. Its wider band is 30 to 36 inches, or 76 to 91 cm, for any surface a pendant lights.

What to measureGuide figure
Table top to bottom of shade75 to 85 cm (76 to 91 cm in US guides)
Extra height for a high ceilingAbout 7.5 cm (3 in) per 30 cm (1 ft) above 8 ft
Gap between pendants, centre to centre60 to 76 cm (24 to 30 in)
End pendant from table edge15 to 30 cm
Weight a ceiling light box must hold (US code)At least 23 kg (50 lb)

The Artika guide adds one more rule: a row of pendants should cover about two thirds of the table’s length. Crate and Barrel adds 3 inches of height for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet.

All our pendant lights hang on 1.5 m of cord, wire or rod as standard. A 1.5 m length covers almost every Indian ceiling, and the extra is cut at installation.

With these numbers in hand, you can work out your own cord length before the ladder comes out.

How to hang a pendant light from the ceiling: your own sum

Take a room with a 10 ft ceiling, which is 305 cm. Your table top sits 76 cm above the floor. Measure your own table; heights vary.

  1. Pick the gap: 80 cm, in the middle of our 75 to 85 cm band.
  2. Shade bottom from the floor: 76 + 80 = 156 cm.
  3. Ceiling to shade bottom: 305 − 156 = 149 cm.
  4. Our Rattan Sunburst Pendant is 20 cm tall. So the cord, from ceiling to the top of the shade, is about 149 − 20 = 129 cm.
  5. The cord comes 150 cm long. Your electrician trims about 150 − 129 = 21 cm, inside the canopy.

Check it against the US rule. A 10 ft ceiling is 2 ft above 8 ft, so 30 + 3 + 3 = 36 inches, or about 91 cm. Our 80 cm sits inside the 76 to 91 cm band, a little lower, so the light stays close to the food.

Now three pendants over a 180 cm six-seater table.

  1. Set the two end pendants 30 cm in from each edge.
  2. Distance between the end pendants: 180 − 30 − 30 = 120 cm.
  3. Three pendants make two gaps: 120 ÷ 2 = 60 cm, centre to centre.
  4. Check: 60 cm meets the low end of the 61 to 76 cm guide band. The row covers 120 ÷ 180 = two thirds of the table.

We checked our own range on 29 October 2026. Of 103 dining room pendants, 71, or 69%, list 1.5 m of cord, wire or rod as the standard length. Others list an adjustable cord, for example up to 120, 170 or 200 cm.

How to hang pendant light at the right height: the logic

The rule follows from where your eyes sit. When you sit at the table, your eyes are well above the tabletop. A shade bottom about 80 cm up covers the bulb from your seat. So you see the faces across the table, not a bright bulb.

Hang it too high and the bulb shows below the shade’s rim. Hang it too low and the shade blocks the person opposite. The 75 to 85 cm band sits between those two mistakes.

When guides differ, let the shade decide. A wide, open shade such as 60 cm of rattan spreads light, so it can sit at the higher end. A small, closed shade such as a 16 cm stone drum pools light, so it can hang lower, near 75 cm.

The science: why a few centimetres matter

Light weakens fast as it travels. The rule is called the inverse square law. Double the distance, and the same light spreads over four times the area, like butter spread over a bigger slice of bread.

Raise a pendant from 80 cm to 160 cm above the table. Only (80 ÷ 160)² = one quarter of the light now reaches your plates. A few centimetres up or down is a real change at the table.

Safety is physics too. A ceiling point must hold the light’s weight for years. The US electrical code asks a light box to hold at least 23 kg, and anything heavier needs its own support. In an Indian home, ask your electrician to check the hook or plate before fitting.

Hung by hand, shaped by hand: the JagMag way

Nature gives the material, and human hands shape it. We have made lights in our own Greater Noida factory since 2015. Our craftsmen bind, turn and hone every shade. We send each pendant on a long cord so your electrician can set the height your table needs.

The Rattan Sunburst Pendant is 60 cm wide and 20 cm tall, with rings bound by hand. The pendant hangs on 1.5 m of wire or rod, as in the sum above. The bulb is not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED in its E27 holder.

The Travertine Drum Pendant is a 16 cm drum of real travertine, cut and honed by hand. Its cord goes up to 170 cm, so a pair or a row can hang at the same low height.

The Layered Wood Pendant: walnut and oak tiers that glow warm over the table.

The Layered Wood Pendant stacks walnut and oak into three tiers, 33 cm wide and 22 cm tall, on 1.5 m of brown cord. Any licensed electrician fits a pendant in 20 to 30 minutes. We also give free installation support on a video call, as our FAQ explains.

A light set at the right height turns the dining table into the calm centre of the home. Vastu thinking values that kind of balance between a space and the people in it.

FAQs

How to hang pendant light over a dining table at the right height?

Hang the bottom of the shade 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop, centred on the table. Add a little height for a ceiling above 8 ft. Your electrician trims the extra cord inside the canopy.

How far apart should pendants be over a dining table?

Keep them about 60 to 75 cm apart, centre to centre. Set the end pendants 15 to 30 cm in from the table edge, so the row covers about two thirds of the table.

How to install pendant light if the ceiling point is not over the table?

Ask your electrician to move the ceiling point over the table’s centre, or to add a second hook that carries the cord across. The pendant should hang straight down over the table, not at an angle.

Can I hang a pendant light myself?

Do the measuring yourself, but leave the wiring to a licensed electrician. Fitting a pendant takes a trained electrician about 20 to 30 minutes, and the power must be off at the MCB first.

Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Vastu inspires harmony. Light brings it to life. That is JagMag.
