A new lighting brand shows up on your phone. Its page carries a row of badges: Startup India, Make in India, a government logo. You feel a little safer about paying.
We are a DPIIT-recognised startup too, so buyers and dealers ask us what the badge means. The plain answer: a DPIIT certificate checks the company, not the chandelier.
Below, you will see what DPIIT checks, how to verify a DPIIT certificate in your browser, and what we found on 12 lighting seller pages.
The short answer
A DPIIT certificate means the government has recognised a business as a startup: no more than 10 years old, with turnover up to ₹200 crore, and working on something new. The certificate does not test the product, the metal or the warranty. Of 12 lighting sellers we read on 28 Oct 2026, 0 showed any certificate other than GST and an import-export code, so check the company and the product separately.
What is really going on with a DPIIT certificate
DPIIT is the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, part of the Commerce Ministry. Its Startup India certificate opens tax and paperwork help for young companies. Here are the numbers.
- New rule in 2026: notification G.S.R. 108(E) of 4 February 2026 replaced the 2019 rule and raised the turnover limit from ₹100 crore to ₹200 crore.
- 10 years, or 20 for deep tech: an ordinary startup stays eligible for 10 years. A deep tech startup, one built on heavy research, gets 20 years and a ₹300 crore limit.
- 2.23 lakh startups: DPIIT had recognised more than 2.23 lakh startups by 31 March 2026.
- 55,200 in one year: more than 55,200 startups were recognised in 2025-26, against 36,400 in 2024-25.
- Uttar Pradesh is growing fast: about 15,000 recognised startups at the end of 2024, and more than 21,960 by 31 March 2026.
- Our study: of 12 lighting sellers read on 28 Oct 2026, 9 had a GST number that marks a single owner, the kind of business that cannot apply.
The checks are about the business, not the goods. DPIIT asks what kind of entity the business is, how old it is, how big it is, and whether it is building something new.
Only some kinds of business can apply. Private limited companies, LLPs (limited liability partnerships) and registered partnership firms qualify, and since 2026 cooperative societies too. A shop owned by one person, called a sole proprietorship, cannot apply at all.
The badge is also common. In 2025-26, 55,200 ÷ 365 = about 151 startups were recognised every day. Growth was fast too: 55,200 against 36,400 is 51.6% more in one year.
Uttar Pradesh, our home state, shows the same climb. 21,960 − 15,000 = 6,960 more startups in about 15 months. 6,960 ÷ 15,000 = 46% growth.
The criteria include no product test. A metal grade, a safety test or a written warranty is a different piece of paper, from a lab, a standards body or the seller. Ask for those separately.
How to check it yourself
These 5 checks take a few minutes on a phone.
- Open startupindia.gov.in and use the “Validate Startup Recognition” tool with the company name or certificate number.
- Read the 6th character of the seller’s 15-character GST number: P means one person, C means a company, F means a firm or LLP.
- Check the company’s age, because recognition lasts 10 years from formation for an ordinary startup.
- Ask for the product papers on their own: the metal grade, the warranty period and any test report.
- Ask for a factory video call, and look for the workbench, the parts and the people.
We read 12 seller pages from IndiaMART’s wall light list on 28 Oct 2026. 12 of 12 showed a verified GST number. 9 of 12 GST numbers had P as the 6th character, a single owner, and 2 had F. 0 of 12 named any certificate other than GST and an import-export code.

Side by side
| What you care about | JagMag | The 12 sellers we read |
|---|---|---|
| Kind of business | Private limited company (C in GST number) | 9 of 12 single owners |
| DPIIT recognition | Yes | Named by 0 of 12 |
| Other certificates | ZED, CE, UL, Startup UP, GST | Only GST and export code |
| Written warranty | Lifetime rust; 1 year on built-in LED | Period stated by 0 of 12 |
| In business since | 2015 (11 years) | Between 1980 and 2025 |
Where the other side is better
Many sellers have been in business longer than us. Half of the 12 sellers we read were set up before 2015, and the oldest in 1980. Decades of trade are real proof, and a missing DPIIT badge says nothing against them.
A single owner can also be very easy to reach. You talk to the person who owns the shop. A certificate is only one way to earn trust.
What we do at JagMag
JagMag Lights, a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, is a DPIIT-recognised startup under the Startup India programme. Our certifications page also shows ZED Bronze, Startup UP and GST. Our products and spare parts are CE and UL certified, and each certificate is available on request.
Our GST number starts with 09, the code for Uttar Pradesh, and its 6th character is C, for a company. We started making lights in 2015 in a small rented space and became a private limited company in February 2019. 2019 + 10 = 2029, so our startup years run to 2029 under the 10-year rule, as long as we meet the other conditions.
A badge is paper; the light is the proof. 284 of our 420 lights use 304 stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink, with a lifetime rust warranty. We keep spare parts for 10+ years and make a custom size or finish in 15 to 20 working days.
Take our alabaster up and down wall light. Alabaster is stone formed beneath the earth, and every piece shows its own veins. The sconce is 35 cm tall, 8 cm wide and 6.5 cm deep, with a built-in 3000K warm-white LED and a gold finish on a 304 stainless steel backplate.

Every light is made in our own factory in Greater Noida, where our craftsman reads the veins of each stone before he shapes it. Natural stone and warm light ground a room, the kind of harmony Vastu thinking has always valued.
Explore our alabaster lighting to see the stone up close. For the other side of the paperwork, read our guide to ZED certification, how to spot a real lighting manufacturer, and the difference between guarantee and warranty.
