Compound Wall Light: What 20 Listings Say About Rust

The first monsoon after you move in, the compound wall looks fresh. The new light by the gate glows warm every evening.

By the second monsoon, a brown line runs down the paint under the lamp. A small chip near the screw has turned orange. The rust is now on your wall too.

A compound wall light faces rain, sun and dust every single day. Its body metal decides how long it looks new.

Below, you will see which metals survive the Indian monsoon, how to check a listing, and what 20 listings told buyers when we read them.

The short answer

For a compound wall light, choose a body of named stainless steel, with the grade written down, and an IP65 rating. Painted iron rusts once the paint chips. In our study of 20 listings, 0 gave a steel grade and only 2 gave a warranty.

What is really going on with outdoor metal

By the numbers

India gets about 868.6 mm of rain from June to September, says the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Those 4 months bring about 75% of India’s yearly rain of 1,160.1 mm.
Bare carbon steel loses 25 to 50 microns a year at 1 to 30 km from the sea (category C3).
Within a few hundred metres of the sea (category C5), the loss is 80 to 200 microns a year.

Rain is the first enemy. 868.6 mm over 122 days of monsoon is about 7.1 mm of water every day, on average. A compound wall light stands out in all of it, with no roof above.

Paint is only a coat. Powder-coated steel does not rust while the coating stays whole. Once a stone, a ladder or a screw chips it, rust starts at the chip and creeps under the paint. The paint then lifts and peels.

The sea makes it faster. Near the coast, salt in the air eats bare steel 3.2 to 4 times faster than at 1 to 30 km from the sea. Here is the sum: 80 divided by 25 is 3.2, and 200 divided by 50 is 4.

Stainless steel works differently. Grade 304 stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink, has 18 to 20% chromium. Jindal Stainless explains that the chromium forms a thin oxide layer that blocks air from the steel.

IP65 is a separate test. IP65 means dust cannot get in, and a water jet from any side does no harm. The IP65 test sprays 12.5 litres a minute for 3 minutes. IP65 keeps water out of the wiring. IP65 does not stop the body from rusting.

Many such lights come from far away. India imported US$201.82 million of such lamps in 2023 and US$195.40 million in 2024, about 3% less. China’s share was 81.0%, then 76.7%. Our wall lights are made here, so you can call the people who made the body.

How to check it yourself

Read the body material line. “Metal” alone tells you nothing.
If it says steel, look for a grade like 304. No grade means you cannot know.
Hold a fridge magnet to a hidden part. A strong pull often means iron or mild steel, though some stainless grades also pull.
Look for IP65 or higher, for water in the wiring.
Ask for the warranty in writing, and ask what it covers: rust, paint or LED.

Where the other side is better

Big electrical brands state their ratings well. Two big-brand listings gave IP66, one step above our IP65. Seven listings named an aluminium body.

Some brands sell solar gate lamps. We do not make a solar light. If your wall has no wiring, a solar lamp may suit you better.

One honest note about our own steel. Near the sea, even 304 stainless steel can get brown “tea staining”. The Australian Stainless Steel Development Association says this happens most often within about 5 km of the surf. If you live that close, tell us before you order.

A compound wall light with a 304 stainless steel body resists rust best of the common choices. Ask for the grade in writing. In our study of 20 listings on 31 Oct 2026, 0 gave a steel grade.

Is IP65 enough for a compound wall light?

IP65 is enough to keep rain out of the wiring. IP65 means a 12.5-litre-a-minute water jet does no harm. IP65 does not stop a painted iron body from rusting.
