You switch on the ceiling light at 10 pm and the bedroom suddenly feels like a clinic. You switch it off and the room goes black. Good ambient lighting bedroom planning fills the gap between those two moments.
Ambient light means the general, all-over light of a room. Below you will find the lux band Indian code gives, three sums for a real 12 × 14 ft room, and the science of why bounced light feels soft.

The short answer
Aim for 75 to 150 lux across the room, the band the National Building Code of India 2016 gives for bedrooms. A 12 × 14 ft room needs about 1,650 to 3,100 lumens from all its lights together. Tall floor lamps with fabric or stone shades give the soft evening part of that light. Keep every bulb warm white.
Ambient lighting bedroom numbers: the band to aim for
Lux measures the light landing on a surface. One lux is one lumen spread over one square metre, and a lumen is a count of the light a bulb gives out.
| What the guide covers | Figure |
|---|---|
| Bedroom, NBC 2016 Part 8 | 75 to 150 lux |
| Hotel bedroom, IS 3646 | 30, 50 or 100 lux |
| Bedroom, Lighting Research Center guide | 10 footcandles, about 108 lux |
| Reading spot, NBC 2016 | 300 to 500 lux |
| Height of the measurement | About 0.85 m above the floor |
| Bedroom bulb colour, NYSERDA | 2,500 to 3,000K |
The figures agree more than they first seem to. Hotels sit lower, so a calm room can go below 75 lux in the evening.
Ambient lights for bedroom use work as one layer of three. Philips names ambient, task and accent. Housing.com says to keep at least two sources, a main light and a task light. A reading spot needs far more light than the room, so give your book its own lamp.
Jaquar describes this layer as soft and diffused, so that it stays easy on the eyes. Warm ambient lighting in a bedroom needs nothing more than that brief.
How many lumens does a 12 × 14 ft bedroom need?
WoodenStreet calls 12 × 14 ft a comfortable size for a master bedroom, so we use that room for the sums.
Sum 1: the light that must reach the bed.
- 12 × 14 ft is 3.66 × 4.27 m, which is 15.6 square metres.
- Take 100 lux, near the middle of the code band.
- 15.6 × 100 = about 1,560 lumens must land at bed height.
Sum 2: the light your bulbs must give.
- Fittings lose some light. The Lighting Research Center says most fittings run at 50% to 95%.
- At 95%: 1,560 ÷ 0.95 = about 1,650 lumens.
- At 50%: 1,560 ÷ 0.5 = about 3,100 lumens.
Sum 3: what one tall lamp gives.
- ENERGY STAR lists 450, 800 and 1,100 lumens for bulbs that replace old 40, 60 and 75 W bulbs.
- Take one 1,100 lumen bulb behind a shade, at the 50% end: 1,100 × 0.5 = 550 lumens.
- Now spread it: 550 ÷ 15.6 = 35 lux.
- An 800 lumen bulb gives 800 × 0.5 ÷ 15.6 = 26 lux.
So one lamp with one bulb gives about 26 to 35 lux. Those figures match the low end of the hotel band. One lamp makes a quiet evening, and the ceiling light stays for cleaning and packing. To reach 100 lux from 800 lumen bulbs alone, you need 3,100 ÷ 800 = about 4 bulbs.
On 3 Nov 2026 we counted the 21 lamps in our bedroom range. Sixteen of them, or 76%, soften the light through a fabric, linen, glass or alabaster shade or body. The split is 8 fabric or linen, 4 glass and 4 alabaster.

Why soft ambient lighting feels soft: the logic and the science
Follow the chain. A bare bulb is a tiny, bright point. A shade spreads that light over a much larger surface. The larger surface is less bright for each square cm, so your eye stays relaxed. Philips says the same in plain words: a light point you can see from your pillow feels harsher than the room needs.
Bounced light works in the same way. ERCO, a lighting maker, explains that indirect light uses the ceiling and walls as second reflectors. Matt surfaces scatter it evenly, so harsh shadows do not form. ERCO also says the light should leave the fitting above eye level, to avoid glare. Glare means a light so bright in your view that seeing gets harder.
Bounced light has a cost. ERCO says indirect light needs a much higher output for the same lux. So pick the 50% end of Sum 2 for a lamp that throws light up at a dark ceiling. The walls matter as well, because white paint sends back about 85% of its light and the darkest paint about 5%.
Distance adds to the loss. At 2 metres you get one fourth of the light you got at 1 metre. So a lamp in the far corner gives a gentle wash, and a lamp near the bed gives more at the pillow.
Guides differ on how bright to go, so let the hour decide. Use the code band of 75 to 150 lux for cleaning and dressing. Drop to one lamp at about 30 lux for the last hour. Our lights do not dim, so choose the softness when you buy the bulb.
Light at night also touches the body clock. In a study of 116 people, room light under 200 lux before bed cut melatonin time by about 90 minutes against light under 3 lux. Melatonin is the hormone that tells your body night has come. Harvard Health adds that blue light has the stronger effect, which is one more reason to stay warm. We make no sleep promises, but a calm, low, warm room is an easy habit.
Nature gives the fibre, hands shape it, light softens the room
A soft room begins with the shade. Linen grows from a plant. Alabaster formed beneath the earth. Wood took years to reach our bench. A craftsman looks at each material before deciding how to work with it, and the switch shows the result.
- The drum shade lamp is 162 cm tall, with a solid wood stand and a 45 × 20 cm linen shade.
- The pleated fabric lamp is 143 cm tall, with a slim 28 cm shade for a tight room.
- The Art Deco lamp is 165 cm tall, with real alabaster and black marble panels in a 45 cm shade.

Where a lamp has a bulb holder, the bulb is not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED. Our craftsmen make every piece in our own factory in India, as they have since 2015, and our certifications page lists our CE, UL and ZED marks. Natural material and warm, quiet light give a bedroom the kind of harmony Vastu thinking values.
FAQs
What is the right ambient lighting bedroom level?
Aim for 75 to 150 lux across the room, as the National Building Code 2016 gives. Drop to about 30 lux in the last hour before bed.
How many lumens does a bedroom need?
A 12 × 14 ft room needs about 1,650 to 3,100 lumens in total. The higher figure suits bounced light and dark walls.
Is a floor lamp enough for a bedroom?
One lamp gives about 26 to 35 lux, so it suits the evening only. Keep a ceiling light for cleaning and packing.
What is the best colour for soft ambient lighting?
Warm white works best, at 2,500 to 3,000K. Fit a 3000K warm-white LED in every holder.
Where should a tall lamp stand in a bedroom?
Stand the lamp in a corner or beside a chair, with the bulb hidden from your pillow. The walls then do the spreading for you.
Nature gives the material.
Human hands give it meaning.
Vastu inspires harmony.
