ZED Certification: What It Means When You Buy Lights

ZED certification concept: a lighting workshop bench with stainless steel chandelier arms under a framed certificate

You walk into a lights shop to buy a chandelier for your new hall. The visiting card says “Manufacturer and Supplier”. Framed papers hang on the wall behind the counter.

You ask where the lights are made. The answer is quick: “Our own unit.” Then the boxes come out, and every box shows a different brand.

So who made your light? And who will stand behind it in five years?

A ZED certificate can answer part of that question. Below, you will see what ZED means and what it does not mean. You will also learn to check one in two minutes.

The short answer

ZED certification is given by India’s Ministry of MSME to manufacturing units, not to shops. A ZED certificate names one factory and one address. If that name matches the maker on your bill, you know who made your light.

What ZED certification really means

ZED stands for Zero Defect Zero Effect. Zero defect is about making a product right, every time. Zero effect is about harming the environment as little as possible.

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises runs the scheme. The Quality Council of India puts it into practice.

The scheme looks at how a unit works. The checks cover quality, safety, production, cleanliness, energy and the environment.

The certificate has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze is the first step. Silver and Gold ask for more.

The office of the Development Commissioner (MSME) says the scheme is open to manufacturing units registered on the Udyam portal. Udyam is the government’s registration for small businesses. A shop that only buys and resells has no factory of its own to put on a ZED certificate.

ZED is not a safety mark printed on a light. The certificate looks at the factory, not at one fitting. So ask about the light’s own safety too.

Bronze is checked mostly on paper. Kanakkupillai, a business-compliance site, explains that Bronze is judged online from documents. Silver and Gold need a visit to the factory. Bronze still tells you something real: a named factory, at a named address, was willing to be checked.

How to check a ZED certificate yourself

You can do these checks at the counter or on WhatsApp before you pay.

  1. Ask for the ZED certificate of the factory that makes your light, not the shop.
  2. Match the unit name and address on the certificate with the maker named on your bill.
  3. Read the level printed on it: Bronze, Silver or Gold.
  4. Check the issue date and the validity line, because a certificate does not last forever.
  5. Note the certificate number and Udyam number, so you can ask the maker to show the record.

Read the name, the address and the date on the certificate.

ZED certificates are also linked with DigiLocker, the government’s document app. So a real maker can share the certificate from the official record, not just a photocopy.

If the seller cannot show any maker’s name, ask why. A good seller will tell you who made the light in one line.

Keep a photo of the certificate with your bill. If you ever need a spare part, you will know exactly which factory to call.

Where a trader is better

A trader can show you many makers’ designs at one counter. You can touch the lights, compare them and carry one home the same day.

If you need a light by tonight for a family function, a trader’s ready stock is hard to beat.

A good trader may also sell lights from a certified maker. In that case the certificate belongs to the maker, so ask for the maker’s name and check that certificate instead.

What we do at JagMag

JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, making lights since 2015. Our ZED Bronze certificate was issued on 12 June 2025 to Jagmag Lights Private Limited. The certificate names our unit in Kasna Industrial Area and is valid for three years.

You can see it, with our Startup India (DPIIT) recognition, on our certifications page. We are proud of Bronze, and we know it is the first of three steps.

The certificate matters because of what happens in that unit. Our teak wood wall light starts as one solid teak bowl. A craftsman turns it on a lathe until fine rings run from the rim to the centre. Then an opal borosilicate glass ball, made from clear glass with white added, goes over the bulb.

Every metal part we make is 304 stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink. We keep spare parts for 10+ years, and we make custom sizes in 15–20 working days. Our Legal Policies, section 4.1A give a lifetime rust warranty on stainless steel parts.

Natural wood and warm light also suit Vastu thinking, which values natural materials and a calm glow at home.

ZED stands for Zero Defect Zero Effect. Zero defect means making the product right, and zero effect means harming the environment as little as possible.
