Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel Lights: Which Rusts First?

Mild steel vs stainless steel: a black painted light arm with rust spreading from a chipped screw hole beside a clean brushed stainless steel arm

You bought a black metal wall light two monsoons ago. On the day it went up, it looked perfect.

Now you see a small brown spot near the screw. A month later, a brown line runs along the arm.

The brown spot is rust. Rust tells you the light was made of mild steel under its paint.

In this guide to mild steel vs stainless steel, you will see why one metal rusts and the other does not. You will also learn five checks to do before you buy your next light.

The short answer

Mild steel rusts once its paint gets a scratch. Stainless steel stays free of rust without any paint. At JagMag, every metal part is 304 stainless steel, the grade used for good kitchen sinks, and we give a lifetime warranty against rust on it.

So why does one metal need paint and the other does not? The answer is in what each metal is made of.

Mild steel vs stainless steel: what is really going on

Most lights sold as “metal” do not say which metal. Very often, the metal is mild steel. Mild steel is plain, low-cost steel, the kind often used for window grills and gates.

Mild steel rusts when air and water touch it. So makers cover it with paint or powder coat. A powder coat is a layer of paint baked hard onto the metal.

The coat is the only shield. A slip of the screwdriver or a bump from a ladder leaves a small gap in it. Rust starts at that gap and creeps under the paint.

Damp air makes the rust spread faster. An Indian monsoon brings months of damp air.

Some rooms test the paint harder than others. A bathroom light sits over hot steam every day. A balcony light takes rain on its side. A kitchen light breathes cooking steam all evening.

In each of these places, a mild steel light depends on its paint staying perfect for years.

Stainless steel works in a different way. The World Stainless Association explains that stainless steel is solid all the way through, not a coat on top of plain steel.

Stainless steel also makes its own thin shield in the air. You cannot see the shield. When you scratch the steel, the shield forms again by itself.

The colour you choose, like matte black or brushed gold, sits on top of the steel. The colour is only for looks. The rust protection lives inside the steel.

You do not have to take a seller’s word for any of this. Here is how to check a light yourself.

How to check it yourself

  1. Read the material line on the listing or the box, because “metal” alone tells you nothing.
  2. Ask the seller to write the metal name on your bill: stainless steel or mild steel.
  3. Hold a fridge magnet to the arm, because mild steel grabs a magnet hard.
  4. Look at the screw holes and cut edges of a display piece, because rust shows there first.
  5. Ask for the rust warranty in writing before you pay.
Magnet check for mild steel vs stainless steel: a hand holds a red horseshoe magnet against the black painted arm of a wall light
A strong pull from a magnet hints at mild steel. Treat it as a hint, not proof.

Use the magnet with care. Stainless steel in lights pulls a magnet weakly or not at all. But bent or pressed stainless steel can pull a little, so a magnet can never prove the grade.

Once you know what to look for, the two metals are easy to compare.

Stainless steel wins on rust. But mild steel has real strengths too, and you should know them.

Where the other side is better

Mild steel costs less on the day you buy it. For a dry room or a short stay, a painted mild steel light can do the job.

Stainless steel is not magic by the sea. Salt water can leave small pits on stainless steel, so wipe a seaside light now and then.

Our rust warranty covers the steel, not the colour on top. A painted or plated finish can still get a scratch. The steel under the finish will not rust.

With both sides on the table, here is what we do in our own factory.

What we do at JagMag

JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting maker in Greater Noida. We have made lights in our own factory since 2015.

Every metal part we make is 304 stainless steel. Our legal policies give a lifetime warranty against rust on those parts, for orders from 4 October 2026.

Our modern outdoor wall light shows the idea well. Its slatted cage is matte black stainless steel. Inside sits opal borosilicate glass, a hard white glass that glows soft. We made the light for walls that face the rain.

Our modern outdoor wall light: a black stainless steel cage made for rain-facing walls.

In our factory, hands cut and finish each steel slat, then fix the slats one by one around the glass. The slow work you never see decides how the light looks in year ten.

Natural materials and warm light give a room a calm, grounded feel. Vastu thinking has always valued that kind of harmony.

For damp corners of your home, see our bathroom wall lights. For a hall, see our brass and metal chandeliers.

Our products and spare parts are CE and UL certified, and we keep spares for 10+ years. You can see the details on our certifications page.

FAQs

Does mild steel rust faster than stainless steel?

Yes, mild steel rusts much sooner. Mild steel rusts as soon as its paint breaks, while stainless steel resists rust with no paint at all.

Mild steel vs stainless steel: which is better for a bathroom light?

Stainless steel is better for a bathroom light. Steam attacks any scratch in the paint of a mild steel light, and stainless steel has no paint to fail.

How do I know if a light is stainless steel or mild steel?

Ask for the metal name in writing, then try a magnet. Mild steel grabs a magnet hard. Stainless steel pulls weakly or not at all, but a magnet only gives a hint.

Are powder-coated lights rust proof?

No, a powder coat protects mild steel only while the coat stays unbroken. Rust starts at scratches, holes and cut edges.

Do JagMag lights have a rust warranty?

Yes, on the steel parts. Every metal part we make is 304 stainless steel, with a lifetime warranty against rust for orders from 4 October 2026. The warranty does not cover finishes, glass, stone, bulbs or wiring.

Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Vastu inspires harmony. Light brings it to life. That is JagMag.
