Your dining table is long, with six or eight chairs around it. A round chandelier looks lost over it, so you want a long one. The question is how long.
Too short, and the ends of the table sit in shadow. Too long, and the light reaches past the table and over the chairs.
Below, you will find the chandelier size for rectangular table tops in three numbers: length, width and hanging height. One worked example puts all three together.
The short answer
Pick a linear chandelier half to two-thirds as long as the table. Keep it at least 30 cm narrower than the table’s width. Hang its lowest point 76 to 91 cm above the table top. For a 180 cm table, that means a chandelier 90 to 120 cm long.
Chandelier size for rectangular table: the length rule
A linear chandelier is a long bar or body of lights, made for long tables. Lighting guides size it by the table, not by the room.
The rule most guides use is half to two-thirds of the table’s length. One guide adds a second check: leave at least 15 cm of table showing beyond the light on every side.
The table below works out the rule for common table lengths.
| Table length | Chandelier length (half to two-thirds) |
|---|---|
| 150 cm | 75 to 100 cm |
| 180 cm | 90 to 120 cm |
| 210 cm | 105 to 140 cm |
| 240 cm | 120 to 160 cm |
We checked our own range against this table on 26 Oct 2026. Of the 31 lights in our linear and rectangular range, 22 list one body length. 7 of those 22 fit a 180 cm table, and 15 fit a 240 cm table.
Chandelier to table ratio: width and height
Length is the first number. Width and height finish the job.
For width, the American Lighting Association suggests a light 12 inches narrower than the table’s shortest side. 12 inches is about 30 cm. A table 90 cm wide can take a light up to 60 cm wide.
For height, guides put the lowest point of the light 76 to 91 cm above the table top. In inches, that is 30 to 36, under an 8-foot ceiling. The Lighting Research Center, a research team in New York, says the lowest point should hang at least 30 inches above the table.
Taller ceilings get a little more space. Add about 3 inches, or 7.5 cm, for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet.
Put all three numbers together for one real table.
- Your table is 180 cm long and 90 cm wide, under a 10-foot ceiling.
- Length: half of 180 is 90, and two-thirds is 120. Choose a chandelier 90 to 120 cm long.
- Width: 90 cm minus 30 cm is 60 cm. Keep the light 60 cm wide or less.
- Height: a 10-foot ceiling is 2 feet above 8 feet, so add 2 × 7.5 = 15 cm. Hang the lowest point 91 to 106 cm above the table.
Linear chandeliers from our range, sized for real tables
Each of our pieces below lists its length, so you can run the same sum. To check a light, multiply its length by 1.5 and by 2. Your table should fall between the two numbers.
Our wood linear chandelier is 150 cm long, so it suits a table of 225 to 300 cm. A curved wood blade carries an acrylic tube with a built-in 3000K warm-white LED. The light hangs on two slim rods, set to your height at fitting.
Shopping now? Our Art Deco linear chandelier is also 150 cm long, with real alabaster and black marble panels on a 304-grade stainless steel frame.
Want the stone itself to glow? Our rectangular alabaster chandelier hangs 32 natural alabaster tubes from a 122 cm (4 ft) canopy, so it suits a table of about 180 to 245 cm.
The ceramic petal chandelier is 120 cm long, a fit for a table of 180 to 240 cm. Its leaves are real porcelain, a fine white clay that our craftsmen shape by hand and fire. Every leaf is a little different. The chandelier takes 10 G9 bulbs, a small two-pin base; bulbs are not included, so fit 3000K warm-white G9 LEDs.

The ceramic chandelier comes on 1.5 m steel cables as standard. Your electrician shortens the cables to the height from the sum above.
For glass, the wave linear chandelier is also 120 cm long. Eight opal borosilicate glass globes sit in a gentle wave and hide the bulbs, so the glow stays soft. The globes take G9 bulbs, not included.

A table that falls between our sizes can still get the right light. We make a custom length or finish in 15 to 20 working days. The work happens in our own factory in India, where our craftsmen have worked since 2015. Our certifications page lists our CE, UL and ZED marks.
Wood, clay and warm light over the table where the family eats together bring the kind of harmony Vastu has always valued.
