Your bathroom has a high ceiling and a big window. A plain tube light feels wrong in a room like that. You picture a compact chandelier hanging in the middle, and then you think about water and electricity.
A chandelier in bathroom spaces is possible. The real question is where it hangs, how low, and what rating it carries.
Below, you will see the wet zone to avoid, the height and size rules, and the compact chandeliers from our range that fit them.
The short answer
Yes, you can hang a chandelier in a bathroom, as long as it stays out of the wet zone. US wiring rules keep any hanging light 900 mm (3 ft) away from a tub or shower. The rule also keeps it 2.5 m (8 ft) above the tub rim or shower step. Keep its lowest point at least 2.29 m (7.5 ft) above the floor, and pick a light rated for damp rooms.
Where a chandelier in bathroom spaces can hang
Start with the wet zone. The California Electrical Code, section 410.10(D), names chain-hung and cord-hung lights, and pendants, as things that must stay out of it.
The zone runs 900 mm sideways from the tub or shower. The zone also rises 2.5 m from the top of the tub rim or the shower step. The space right above the tub is inside it.
Now do the sum for your own bathroom. Say your tub rim stands 55 cm off the floor; measure yours. 55 cm plus 2.5 m puts the top of the zone at 3.05 m. A 3 m ceiling is lower than that, so no chandelier can hang over that tub.
So if your ceiling is 3 m or lower, the tub and the shower are off limits for a hanging light.
The UK rules draw a second line around water. Zone 2 runs 60 cm out from the space above the bath or shower. A light there needs at least IPX4, which means splashing water from any side does no harm. Our guide on the IP65 meaning explains each digit.
Bathroom chandelier ideas that keep clear of water
- Hang it over the dressing area, well away from the shower glass.
- Hang it in the middle of a large bathroom, more than 900 mm from the tub or shower.
- Hang it over a dry vanity corner, more than 60 cm from the tap.
- In a small, fully wet bathroom, skip the chandelier. A flush ceiling light suits that room better.
Some bathrooms have no separate shower area. Water reaches the whole floor in a room like that. A sealed ceiling light makes more sense there than anything that hangs.
How high and how big a bathroom chandelier should be
Head room comes first. Two home guides we read, This Old House and Ideal Home, both give 7.5 feet as the lowest point of a central chandelier. 7.5 feet is about 2.29 m.
Work out your own limit. A 3 m ceiling minus 2.29 m leaves 71 cm. The chandelier body and its chain must fit inside those 71 cm.
Size comes next. One simple rule adds the room’s length and width in feet. The total, read as inches, gives a chandelier width.
Try it on a bathroom of 2.4 m by 3 m. 2.4 m is 7.9 feet, and 3 m is 9.8 feet. Together they make 17.7, so about 17.7 inches, or 45 cm, is the widest chandelier to choose. In a bathroom, the smaller side of that number usually looks better.
Weight matters too. A stone chandelier can be heavy, so ask your electrician to fix a strong hook into the slab, not into a false ceiling board.
The rating matters most of all. The same guides advise a light rated for damp or wet rooms. One lighting designer suggests at least IP44 for any bathroom light.
We checked our own range against that rule. On 26 Oct 2026, 1 of the 9 chandeliers in our compact range was rated IP65. The other 8 were IP20, which means no water protection. Those 8 belong in a dry dressing room, never near the shower.
Compact chandeliers from our range that fit the rule
The alabaster bowl chandelier is our sealed choice. The bowl is 36.2 cm across and 22.9 cm deep, under the 45 cm limit from our sum. A built-in 3000K LED lights it, with no bulb needed. The light is rated IP65, sealed against dust and water.

The bowl hangs on a chain, so the wet-zone rule still applies. Keep it 900 mm clear of the tub and shower. The light weighs 12 kg, so it needs that strong hook in the slab.
The bowl is natural alabaster, stone formed beneath the earth, set in a walnut wood ring. Our craftsmen make every piece in our Greater Noida factory, where we have worked since 2015. Switch it on and the stone glows from inside.
For a dry dressing room, look at our milk glass chandelier. Its shade is 24.4 cm across, and the whole light drops 36.15 cm. Three opal borosilicate glass globes sit under a pleated cream fabric shade. The light takes 3 E14 bulbs; bulbs are not included, so fit 3000K warm-white LEDs. The light is IP20, so keep it out of the wet zones.

Our products and spare parts are CE and UL certified, as our certifications page shows. Warm light on real stone and glass gives a bathroom the calm that Vastu thinking values.
FAQs
Can you put a chandelier in a bathroom?
Yes, a chandelier in a bathroom is fine outside the wet zone. Keep it 900 mm sideways and 2.5 m up from the tub rim or shower step, and 2.29 m above the floor.
Can a chandelier hang over a bathtub?
Only if every part of it sits more than 2.5 m above the tub rim. Under US wiring rules, chain-hung lights and pendants cannot sit inside that space.
What IP rating does a bathroom chandelier need?
Aim for at least IP44 anywhere in a bathroom, and IP65 near the shower. An IP20 chandelier has no water protection, so keep it in a dry dressing area.
How low can a bathroom chandelier hang?
Keep the lowest point at least 2.29 m, or 7.5 feet, above the floor. On a 3 m ceiling, the chandelier and chain together can drop about 71 cm.
What size chandelier suits a small bathroom?
Add the length and width in feet and read the total as inches. A 2.4 m by 3 m bathroom gives about 17.7 inches, or 45 cm, so choose that width or smaller.
