Your bedroom has a bed, a wardrobe and maybe one chair. After that, the floor is gone. You search small bedroom ideas and get pretty photos, but few of them tell you how much space to leave, or how to light the room so it feels bigger.
Below you will find the real numbers for a small Indian bedroom. You will see the space around the bed, the light the room needs, and why a lamp on the floor can free up more space than a table.

The short answer
Keep about 60 cm of walking space beside the bed and plan for 75–150 lux of light. In a 9.6 m² room, that means roughly 720–1,440 lumens. Light the walls, not just the floor, and use a slim floor lamp in place of a second bedside table.
Small bedroom ideas start with the numbers
Indian building rules set a floor for room size. The Model Building Bye-Laws ask for a habitable room of at least 9.5 m², at least 2.4 m wide. On plots up to 50 m², the rule drops to 7.5 m² and 2.1 m wide.
The bed takes most of that floor. Kurlon lists a queen mattress as 60 by 72–78 inches, about 152 by 183–198 cm. A double is 48 inches wide, about 122 cm.
Houzz India gives the walking space. Leave about 24 inches, or 61 cm, on the open side of the bed. A bedside table runs 21–36 inches long and about 15 inches deep.
Light comes next. Indian engineering guides report the National Building Code range. The code sets 75–150 lux for a bedroom and 300–500 lux on a page you read. India’s older lighting code, IS 3646, puts general bedroom light at 100 lux. A lux is the light that lands on one square metre, so the lux number tells you how bright the floor and the bed will look.
Good bedroom ideas for small rooms use fewer lights, but the right kind. Our floor lamps stand on a base the size of a dinner plate, so they give light without taking a table’s worth of floor.

How much space and light does a small bedroom need?
Take a common room of 3.0 m by 3.2 m with a queen bed. Follow the sum step by step.
- Floor area: 3.0 × 3.2 = 9.6 m². The room just passes the 9.5 m² rule.
- Bed area: 1.52 × 1.98 = 3.0 m². The bed takes 31% of the floor.
- Side space: (300 − 152) ÷ 2 = 74 cm on each side. Both sides beat the 61 cm guide.
- Foot space: 320 − 198 = 122 cm. Enough for a walkway and a wardrobe door.
- Light needed: 9.6 m² × 75 lux = 720 lumens. At 150 lux, 9.6 × 150 = 1,440 lumens. A lumen is the total light a bulb gives out, like litres from a tap.
- Table versus lamp: a 53 × 38 cm bedside table covers 0.20 m². A lamp base 18 cm across covers π × 0.09² = 0.025 m². The table takes 8 times more floor.
Our own count backs the lamp idea. On 1 November 2026 we checked the 12 lamps in our bedroom floor lamp range. They stand 150–182 cm tall. The 10 with a round base measure 18–34 cm across, with a median of 27.5 cm.

Why light walls make a small bedroom feel bigger
The best small bedroom ideas follow one chain of logic. Your eye judges a room by its edges. Bright edges look farther away. So a lit wall makes the room read wider, and a lit ceiling makes it read taller.
Research agrees. A US NIST review of lighting studies reports that Flynn found wall washing gave stronger impressions of spaciousness. Wall washing means spreading light evenly down a wall. A 2010 study by Oberfeld and colleagues found people judged a room taller when the ceiling was lighter, and also when the walls were lighter.
Paint does half the work. Light Reflectance Value, or LRV, runs from 0 for black to 100 for pure white, says Sherwin-Williams. White paint reflects 75–90% of the light that hits it, per a University of North Carolina lighting table. A dark wall swallows most of the light, so you need more lamps for the same brightness.
Distance matters too. HyperPhysics explains the inverse square law: light at 2 m is one quarter of the light at 1 m. A lamp beside the bed sits close to your page, so a small lamp gives plenty of reading light.
Guides differ on clearance, from 60 cm to 90 cm. Choose 60 cm for a side you only walk past. Choose 90 cm where a wardrobe door must swing open.
Decorating a small bedroom is easier with these rules in hand. Pick light paint, light the walls, and keep the floor clear.
The JagMag way: nature, hands, light
Nature gives the material. Human hands shape it. Light connects it to your evening. A small room shows every object, so each one should earn its place.
The Slim Floor Lamp stands 150 cm tall on an 18 cm base. A warm 3000K LED glows along the whole stem, so the wall gets an even wash. Its frame is 304-grade stainless steel.
The Wooden Floor Lamp pairs a fluted wood column with a 55 cm natural linen shade. The lamp stands 160 cm on a 34 cm base. Bulb not included; fit a 3000K warm-white LED.

For reading in bed, the LED Floor Lamp with Reading Light carries a ring uplight and a reading arm on one 180 cm stem. The ring lights the ceiling; the arm lights your book.
Our craftsmen make each lamp in our own factory in India, as we have since 2015. Every stainless steel part carries a lifetime warranty against rust, as our legal policies explain. In Vastu thinking, a clear floor and warm light keep a bedroom calm. We see that as harmony, not luck.
FAQs
What are the best small bedroom ideas to make the room look bigger?
Use light paint, light the walls, and keep the floor clear. White paint reflects 75–90% of light, and studies link bright walls with a sense of space.
How much space should be left around a bed?
Leave about 60 cm on each open side. Houzz India gives 24 inches as the minimum, and 90 cm suits a side where a wardrobe door opens.
What is the minimum size of a bedroom in India?
The Model Building Bye-Laws ask for 9.5 m² and 2.4 m width for a habitable room. On plots up to 50 m², the figure is 7.5 m² and 2.1 m.
How many lumens does a small bedroom need?
A 9.6 m² bedroom needs about 720–1,440 lumens. Multiply the floor area by 75–150 lux, the bedroom range in the National Building Code.
Which bed size suits small bedroom decor ideas?
A double bed, 122 cm wide, leaves the most floor. A queen bed, 152 cm wide, still fits a 3 m wide room with 74 cm on each side.
