Rechargeable Table Lamp or Plug-In? 5 Battery Facts

Rechargeable table lamp concept: a cordless lamp on charge beside a travertine table lamp (AI-generated concept image)

The power goes out at 8 in the evening. Your phone torch is on 20%. Then you remember the little lamp you charged last week, and the dining table glows again.

A rechargeable table lamp feels like a small miracle on nights like that. No wire, no socket, no electrician.

A year later, the same lamp gives up long before dinner is over. You open the listing again. The page never said what battery was inside.

Below, you will see what wears out in a battery lamp and what 12 listings told us. You will also see when a plug-in lamp is the better buy.

The short answer

A rechargeable table lamp is great for power cuts and for places with no socket. Its lithium-ion battery is usually rated for 300 to 500 full charges. Charged every day, that is about 10 to 16 months. A plug-in table lamp has no battery to wear out. A JagMag lamp also keeps its spare parts on sale for 10+ years.

What is really going on

By the numbers:

  • Battery University says makers rate lithium-ion batteries in most consumer products for 300 to 500 charge cycles.
  • A lithium-ion battery kept full at 40°C keeps about 65% of its capacity after 1 year. At 25°C, it keeps about 80%.
  • We read 12 battery lamp listings on 29 October 2026. Only 1 gave the battery size, and only 2 gave the hours per charge.
  • India produced 1.751 million tonnes of e-waste in 2023-24, up from 1.01 million tonnes in 2019-20.
  • India’s Battery Waste Management Rules, published on 24 August 2022, cover every kind of battery, including small portable ones.
  • We make 43 table lamps. 0 of them run on a battery, and 42 list their spare parts on the page.

A battery is not a tank that stays full forever. A battery is more like a pair of slippers. Every full charge and empty wears it a little.

One full charge from empty to full is called a cycle. Battery University, a well-known battery guide, puts most consumer lithium-ion batteries at 300 to 500 cycles before they fade.

Here is the sum. Charge the lamp once a day, and you use 365 cycles a year. 300 cycles ÷ 365 days is about 10 months. 500 cycles ÷ 365 days is about 16 months.

Charge it every second day, and the same battery lasts longer. 600 to 1,000 days works out to about 1.6 to 2.7 years.

Heat matters too. A battery kept full at 40°C loses about 35% of its capacity in a year. At 25°C, the loss is about 20%. 35 ÷ 20 is 1.75, so the hot room takes capacity away 1.75 times faster.

India’s e-waste is growing fast. A minister’s reply in the Rajya Sabha put the rise from 2019-20 to 2023-24 at 72.54%. A lamp you throw away for one tired battery adds to that pile.

A plug-in lamp works in a different way. The power comes from your wall, so there is no battery to wear out with each evening’s charge. Most of our table lamps take a normal LED bulb that you can change yourself.

How to check a battery operated table lamp

  1. Find the battery size in mAh (milliamp-hours, the size of the battery’s tank). Only 1 of our 12 listings gave a number, and that page showed both 400 and 700 mAh.
  2. Find the hours per charge, and at which brightness. One listing gave 5 hours on low and 2 hours on high.
  3. Read the warranty in months, and ask if it covers the battery. 4 of our 12 listings gave a warranty, from 6 to 24 months.
  4. Ask the seller: “Can I buy a new battery for this lamp, and who fits it?”
  5. Look for the country of origin and the maker’s name. Under the 2022 battery rules, the producer is responsible for collecting and recycling the batteries it sells.

Where the rechargeable table lamp is better

A rechargeable lamp keeps working in a power cut, for 2 to 5 hours on the 2 listings that said. Our lamps go dark with the mains.

A cordless lamp also moves with you, from the dining table to the balcony. 8 of the 12 listings offer touch control, dimming or colour modes. Our lamps are not dimmable, and our built-in LEDs are 3000K warm white only.

What we do at JagMag

JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting maker in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. We have made our lights in our own factory since 2015. 37 of our 43 table lamps have a standard bulb holder. When a bulb gets tired, you change the bulb, not the lamp.

Take our travertine table lamp with fabric shade. The lamp stands 56 cm tall with a 46 cm shade. Its base is natural travertine stone, so every base has its own pores and swirls. You fit one 5 to 7 W E27 LED bulb in 3000K warm white. The bulb is not included.

Our 56 cm travertine table lamp: a natural stone base and a plug-in E27 holder.

Hands in our factory polish each stone base, and we make the neck, cap and holder ourselves. Even 10 years from now, you can buy just the shade, the cap or the holder. Natural stone and warm light also sit well with Vastu thinking, which values natural elements in a calm room.

Steel parts use 304 stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink. Our legal policies give a lifetime warranty against rust on those parts, for orders from 4 October 2026. Our certifications page lists CE, UL and ZED.
