Chandelier Hook: How Much Weight It Must Hold (5x Rule)

The chandelier is finally home. The box is heavy. Your electrician looks up at the ceiling and asks one question: “Kitna wazan hai?” How much does it weigh?

You check the box. You check the listing. Often, there is no number.

A chandelier hook is a small piece of steel. But it holds a lot of glass over your family’s heads. A hook in the wrong place can pull out of a false ceiling.

Below, you will see how heavy chandeliers are, what a chandelier hook must hold, and what 20 listings told buyers.

The short answer

A chandelier hook must go into the concrete slab, not into the false ceiling board. Pick a hook and fixing rated for about 5 times the chandelier’s weight. A 16 kg chandelier needs a fixing rated for at least 80 kg.

What is really going on with a chandelier hook

By the numbers

We read 20 chandelier listings sold in India on 31 Oct 2026. Only 8 gave a weight with a unit.
The 8 weights ran from 0.5 kg to 20 kg. The middle value was about 4 kg.
0 of the 20 said a hook or ceiling plate comes in the box.
Stage rigging rules use a design factor of 5 to 1 for loads that hang overhead.
The US electrical code lets a ceiling box hold a light up to 23 kg (50 lb). Anything heavier needs its own support.
India imported chandeliers and ceiling or wall lights worth US$55.29 million in 2024. About 73.8% came from China.

Weight is the first fact you need. In our study, the lightest listed chandelier was 0.5 kg and the heaviest was 20 kg. Our K9 crystal chandeliers weigh about 4 kg for every square foot of top plate.

Here is the first sum. A 2 × 2 ft crystal plate is 4 square feet. 4 square feet × 4 kg = about 16 kg. 16 kg is the weight your hook carries, every day, for years.

Now the safety margin. Stage riggers use a design factor of 5 to 1. A 5 to 1 factor means the fixing should hold 5 times the load before it fails. 16 kg × 5 = 80 kg. A 3 × 3 ft plate is 9 square feet, so about 36 kg. 36 kg × 5 = 180 kg.

A false ceiling is the second fact. Many Indian false ceilings are gypsum board on a light frame. Asian Paints notes that a gypsum ceiling “is not as sturdy as a slab”. So the hook must pass through the board and grip the concrete above it.

The 23 kg line is the third fact. The US code says a light above 23 kg must be held up on its own, not by the electrical box. The same logic works in an Indian home. Above about 23 kg, use a hook or plate fixed straight into the slab.

Lights sold online often come from far away. India imported US$62.80 million of chandeliers and ceiling or wall lights in 2019, and US$55.29 million in 2024. The import bill fell 12% in 5 years. China’s share still rose, from 70.3% to 73.8%. A light that crossed an ocean rarely arrives with a fixing plan for your ceiling. How to check it yourself

Find the weight in kg on the listing. If it is missing, ask the seller in writing.
Ask if the weight is the light alone or the shipping box. On our own crystal chandelier, the shipping weight is about 1.9 to 4.4 times the light’s weight.
Multiply the light’s weight by 5. Your hook and anchor must be rated for at least that number.
Knock on the ceiling. A hollow sound means false ceiling. The hook must reach the slab above.
Ask what comes in the box: hook, ceiling plate, screws, chain. Write it down before you pay.

A chandelier hook should be rated for at least 5 times your chandelier’s weight. For a 16 kg chandelier, choose a hook and anchor rated for 80 kg or more, fixed into the concrete slab.

Can I hang a chandelier from a false ceiling?

No, not from the gypsum board alone. Fix the chandelier hook or plate into the concrete slab above, and let the chain or rod pass through the false ceiling.

How heavy is a chandelier?
