Double Height Chandelier: 3 Sums to Get the Size Right

Double height chandelier concept: a two-storey Indian hall with a teak staircase, a long tiered crystal cascade hanging into the tall void and a tape measure on the marble floor (AI-generated concept image)

You stand in your new hall and look up. The ceiling is two floors above you. The chandelier from your old flat would look like a small earring on that tall wall.

So you visit a lighting shop. The seller lifts a big chandelier off the shelf. You ask how far it hangs down. He is not sure, and he does not know what it weighs.

A double height chandelier is the one light in your home you should not guess. Too small, and the hall looks empty. Too long, and the crystals hit the people on the stairs.

Below, you get three simple sums for the size and five questions for the seller. You will also see what we found when we read 28 chandelier listings.

The short answer

A double height chandelier should be about 1.5 times wider than the normal rule gives. Its lowest point should stay at least 7 ft above the floor. For a 20 × 15 ft hall with a 20 ft ceiling, you want a light about 133 cm wide that drops no more than 13 ft.

What is really going on with a double height chandelier

A tall hall needs a light that fills height, not only width. Here are the numbers behind that.

  • A normal room is 8 to 9 ft tall. A double-height space is 18 to 24 ft, says the builder guide Brick & Bolt.
  • The width rule: add the room’s length and width in feet. Use that number in inches. For a double-height foyer, multiply it by 1.5.
  • The safe height: the lowest point should hang at least 7 ft above the floor where people walk.
  • Our study: of 28 chandelier listings we read on IndiaMART on 27 Oct 2026, only 3 gave a height. None gave a weight.
  • Weight grows fast: our raindrop staircase chandelier weighs about 9.9 kg in its smallest size and about 158.4 kg in its largest.
  • Many big lights come from abroad: in 2024, India imported chandeliers and ceiling lights worth US$55.3 million, and 73.8% came from China (World Bank trade data).

A double-height hall is two to three times taller than a normal room. An 18 ft hall is 2 times a 9 ft room. A 24 ft hall is 3 times an 8 ft room.

A chandelier sized for a 9 ft room looks lost in an 18 ft hall. The fix is a longer drop. The drop is the length from the ceiling to the lowest crystal.

Here is the width sum for a hall of 20 × 15 ft. Add 20 and 15 to get 35. A normal room would need a light about 35 inches wide.

A double-height hall needs 1.5 times more. 35 × 1.5 = 52.5 inches. 52.5 inches is about 133 cm, or a little over 4 ft.

Now the drop sum. Say your ceiling is 20 ft. Keep 7 ft clear above the floor. 20 − 7 = 13, so the light can drop up to 13 ft. In a 24 ft hall, the same sum gives 17 ft.

Weight matters just as much as size. Our largest raindrop size weighs 16 times our smallest, because 158.4 ÷ 9.9 = 16. A gypsum false ceiling, the light board ceiling in many flats, is not as strong as the concrete slab above it.

Asian Paints advises fixing a strong hook into the slab before the false ceiling goes up. So the weight of your chandelier decides the fixing, and the fixing must be ready before the painter comes.

How to check it yourself

Take a tape and your phone. These five checks take ten minutes.

  1. Add your hall’s length and width in feet, then multiply by 1.5. The answer in inches is your width (20 + 15 = 35, and 35 × 1.5 = 52.5 inches).
  2. Measure floor to ceiling and take away 7 ft. Ask for a drop shorter than that (13 ft or less for a 20 ft ceiling).
  3. Ask the seller to write the drop in feet or cm on the bill.
  4. Ask for the weight in kg, and ask your electrician if the slab hook can hold it.
  5. Ask who will send you one spare crystal strand or holder after 5 years.

Where the local market is better

The market gives you choice. The IndiaMART chandelier page alone showed 35 listings, from Firozabad, Moradabad, New Delhi, Mumbai and more. 6 of the 28 main listings came from Firozabad sellers.

Some market sellers are makers with a long record. One Delhi maker we read names 304-grade steel for its base plate and offers a 3-year structural warranty. The firm started in 2011, which is 4 years before we did.

Speed can be better too. One Delhi listing for an 8 × 8 ft crystal chandelier promised delivery in 3 days. Our in-stock lights leave the factory in 4 working days.

What we do at JagMag

JagMag Lights, a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, makes tall chandeliers to the size of your hall. 5 of our 95 chandeliers are built for tall spaces, with drops of up to 16 or 20 ft. If your hall falls between two sizes, we make a custom size in 15–20 days.

Our raindrop crystal chandelier for staircases comes in six sizes, from 1.5 ft wide with a 6 ft drop to 6 ft wide with a 20 ft drop. The chandelier hangs real K9 crystal from a 304-grade stainless steel plate. Each holder takes a G9 bulb, not included, so fit 3000K warm-white LEDs.

In our Greater Noida factory, a craftsman cuts each wire to its length and threads the crystal on by hand, tier by tier. We have made lights here since 2015. Even 10 years from now, you can buy one crystal strand or one holder from us.

In 2025 we lit the double-height sales office at SKA Destiny One in Greater Noida. Our technician fitted a four-ring LED chandelier from scaffolding. You can see the SKA Destiny project photos.

The steel carries a lifetime warranty against rusting on orders from 4 October 2026. Vastu thinking asks for stairs and halls that are evenly lit, with no dark corners, and a tall cascade of warm light does that.
