Diwali cleaning starts with the chandelier. You climb the ladder with a soft cloth and wipe each drop.
The drops do not sparkle the way they did on day one. Some look cloudy. A few have fine scratches. One or two have turned a little yellow.
The bill said “crystal jhumar”. But some lights sold as crystal are an acrylic chandelier. Acrylic is a kind of clear plastic.
Below, you will learn how to tell acrylic from K9 crystal, before you pay.
The short answer
An acrylic chandelier uses clear plastic drops. A K9 crystal chandelier uses real glass drops that stay clear and throw rainbows for years. Read the material line, feel the weight, and get “K9 crystal” written on your bill.
What is really going on
K9 crystal is a clear optical glass. Optical glass is the kind made for lenses and telescopes. In a chandelier, each K9 drop is cut with many small flat faces, so light breaks into small rainbows.
Acrylic is a hard, clear plastic. A new acrylic drop can look almost as clear as glass. The trouble starts with time and touch.
Acrylic scratches easily. A fingernail, a key or a rough cloth can leave a mark that stays. K9 crystal does not scratch from normal dusting.
Acrylic can also turn slightly yellow after years of sunlight. K9 crystal does not change colour.
Acrylic drops also sparkle less. The cut edges look softer, so the rainbows on your wall are weak or missing.
Weight is the other clue. Acrylic weighs about half as much as glass of the same size. A crystal drop feels solid in your hand. An acrylic drop feels much lighter.
Cleaning shows the difference over the years. Each wipe can leave a fine line on soft plastic. After a few festive seasons, those lines turn the shine into a haze. Crystal takes the same cloth and comes back clear. Our guide on how to clean a crystal chandelier shows the safe way.
The word “crystal” in a title does not tell you the material. We found an IndiaMART listing titled “Candle PVC Crystal jhumar acrylic jhumar”. The material line on the same listing said “Acrylic”.
How to check an acrylic chandelier yourself
You can do these checks in a shop or on a listing in five minutes.
- Read the material line, not the title, and look for “K9 crystal” or “acrylic”.
- Hold one drop in your palm, because an acrylic drop feels about half as heavy as glass.
- Hold the drop up to a sunny window and look for a sharp rainbow on the wall.
- Look along the edges under a bright light for fine scratches or dull, soft corners.
- Ask the seller to write “K9 crystal” on the bill before you pay.

On 13 October 2026 we read 15 acrylic listings in the IndiaMART chandelier section. Six listings did not fill in the material line at all.
A blank material line is a reason to ask. A seller who knows the material will tell you in one line.
Some sellers use “crystal” to mean the style of the light, not the material. So the word alone proves nothing. Your money pays for the material, so get the material in writing.

Where acrylic is better
Acrylic is light. A light chandelier puts less load on your ceiling and is easier to hang.
Acrylic does not shatter when dropped. Glass can break on a hard floor. In a children’s room, acrylic is a fair choice.
Acrylic lights usually cost less, and you can find many modern shapes from sellers across India.
So acrylic can be the right choice for a playful kids’ room, a short rental or a quick party look. Just buy it knowing it is acrylic, at an acrylic price.
What we do at JagMag
JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, making lights since 2015. Our crystal chandeliers use real K9 crystal.
The frame is 304 stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink.
Our long K9 crystal raindrop chandelier is a good example. Hundreds of cut K9 crystal balls hang in one long column. Each ball is strung by hand, so the column narrows evenly from the ceiling down. Lights in stock leave our factory in 4 working days.

We use acrylic too, in a few pendants and wall lights, because it suits those designs. When we do, the product page says acrylic. We never call it crystal.
We keep spare parts for 10+ years. If one drop breaks, a matching chandelier crystal part comes from our own stock. The stainless steel frame carries a lifetime rust warranty, written in our Legal Policies, section 4.1A.
Clear crystal and warm light also suit Vastu thinking, which values a bright, calm centre in the hall.

K9 crystal is a clear optical glass, the kind made for lenses and telescopes. Cut into drops, it throws sharp rainbows and stays clear for years.
How can I tell if a chandelier is crystal or acrylic?

Acrylic vs crystal chandelier: which should I choose?
Choose K9 crystal if you want real sparkle that stays clear for years. Acrylic is lighter, so it suits a weak ceiling or a room where children play, but it scratches more easily and can turn yellow over time. Every JagMag crystal chandelier uses K9 crystal on a 304-grade stainless steel frame, and we keep spare crystals for 10+ years.
