- Bedroom wall lights: your questions, answered
It’s late. The big ceiling light feels too harsh now.
You want to read a few pages, or just sit on the edge of the bed and slow down. But flipping on the main light wakes the whole room — and the person next to you.
That’s the moment bedroom wall lights were made for. A soft pool of light on each side of the bed. Enough to read by. Gentle enough that sleep still comes easily.
Quick answer: Bedroom wall lights are sconces fixed to the wall — usually one on each side of the bed — that give a warm, glare-free glow for reading and winding down, without lighting the whole ceiling. Mount them about 5 to 5.5 feet off the floor, beside the headboard, and choose warm white (2700K) dimmable bulbs. JagMag Lights makes them in India, in our own factory, with bedroom wall lights starting from ₹2,250.
Why bedroom wall lights change how the room feels
Here’s the thing. A bedroom isn’t an office.
You don’t need bright, even light everywhere. You need layers — a soft main glow, and small warm pools where you actually do things. Read. Talk. Reach for a glass of water at 2am.
One big ceiling light can’t do that. It’s all-on or all-off.
Wall lights fix it. Put a pair beside the bed and you get light exactly where your hands are — not blasting down into your eyes. Add a dimmer and the same lights take you from “getting ready” bright to “almost asleep” soft.
The result: a room that finally feels calm at night, not like a waiting room.

How high should bedroom wall lights go?
This is the question everyone gets wrong. Too high and the light shines past you. Too low and it glares in your eyes when you sit up.
Here’s the simple rule: mount bedside wall lights so the bottom of the shade sits a little above your eye level when you’re sitting up in bed. For most beds that’s around 5 to 5.5 feet from the floor.
A few more quick numbers:
- Distance from the bed: centre each light about 6–12 inches out from the edge of the headboard, so the light falls on your book, not the wall.
- As a pair: match the two sides. Same height, same fitting. The room looks finished, not accidental.
- Above a dresser or mirror: go a little higher, around 6 to 6.5 feet, so the light washes down evenly.
| Where in the bedroom | Mounting height (floor to bottom of shade) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beside the bed (reading) | 5 – 5.5 ft | Light lands on your book, not your eyes |
| Over a dresser / mirror | 6 – 6.5 ft | Even wash, no shadows on your face |
| As a hallway / accent into the room | 5.5 – 6 ft | Soft guide light, not a spotlight |
Warm light or white light for a bedroom?
You might be thinking white light looks cleaner. In a kitchen, sure. In a bedroom, it works against you.
Cool white light keeps your brain alert — the opposite of what you want at bedtime. Warm light does the opposite: it tells your body the day is ending.
So for bedroom wall lights, pick warm white bulbs, around 2700K — a soft, golden, candle-like glow. Add a dimmer if you can. Bright while you get ready, low while you drift off.
That’s about all the science you need. If you like the detail, the US Department of Energy’s lighting guide explains LED savings well, and colour temperature is worth a quick read too.

Look at this. None of these need an electrician’s degree — just the right fitting in the right spot.
- The matched bedside pair. The classic. One sconce each side of the headboard at reading height. Instantly makes the bed feel like a hotel room.
- Swing-arm readers. Pick a wall light with a movable arm, like our swing-arm bedside reading light. Pull it close to read, push it back to sleep. Perfect if you don’t have room for a table lamp.
- Up-and-down glow. A sconce that throws light both up and down softens the whole wall — great behind a tall headboard.
- Frame the mirror. A pair either side of your dressing mirror beats one harsh overhead light for getting ready.
- Wash a textured wall. Got a panelled or stone feature wall? A wall light close to it grazes the surface and shows off the texture at night.
- Low night-glow by the door. One soft sconce near the doorway, on a dimmer, becomes a gentle night light — no tripping in the dark.
- Match your chandelier. If your bedroom has a chandelier or pendant, echo its finish in the wall lights so the room feels designed. We wrote a whole post on matching wall lights with chandeliers.

Why buy bedroom wall lights from a maker, not an importer
Most wall lights on big sites are imported and stocked. When the design sells out, it’s gone. Need a matching second pair for the guest room next year? Good luck.
JagMag is different. We’re a 100% Make-in-India manufacturer.
- Spare parts for 10+ years: a shade cracks, we make you another — because we still own the design.
- Reorder anytime: need the same pair again for another room or a whole hotel floor? We simply make it.
- Fast custom work: 15–20 working days for a custom finish, against 60–120 days most importers quote.
- Our own service team: a problem on a project gets fixed by our people in India — no waiting on a supplier overseas.
That last point matters most for designers, builders and hotels. (DPIIT-recognised, government-funded, Greater Noida.)
Bedroom wall lights: your questions, answered
How high should bedroom wall lights be mounted?
Mount bedside wall lights about 5 to 5.5 feet from the floor — so the bottom of the shade sits just above your eye level when you sit up in bed. Over a dresser or mirror, go a little higher, around 6 to 6.5 feet, for an even wash of light.
Should bedroom wall lights be warm or cool white?
Warm white, around 2700K. It gives a soft golden glow that helps your body wind down for sleep. Cool white keeps you alert, which works against bedtime. A dimmer makes the same light flexible — bright to get ready, low to drift off.
Do I need one wall light or a pair beside the bed?
A matched pair, one on each side, looks the most finished and gives both people their own reading light. If only one person reads, a single swing-arm sconce on that side works well and saves space.
Can bedroom wall lights replace a table lamp?
Yes. Wall lights free up your bedside table and never get knocked over. A swing-arm wall light is the closest match to a table lamp because you can pull it in to read and push it back to sleep.
Are JagMag bedroom wall lights made in India?
Yes. JagMag Lights is a 100% Make-in-India manufacturer based in Greater Noida. Because we own the manufacturing, you get spare parts for 10+ years, reliable reorders, and fast 15–20 day custom work. Bedroom wall lights start from ₹2,250.
