You fell for the look. Black curved arms. Little candle cups. A wrought iron chandelier that feels like an old haveli.
The listing said “wrought iron”, so you felt safe. Iron sounds strong. Iron sounds like it will last forever.
Then two monsoons pass. One day you see a small brown spot near a screw. The spot grows a little every rainy season.
You start to wonder what the metal really was. The bill does not say.
Below, you will see what a wrought iron chandelier is usually made of today. You will also learn how to check the metal in a shop, and when stainless steel is the better buy.
The short answer
Most chandeliers sold as “wrought iron” today are painted mild steel, not true wrought iron. Mild steel rusts where the paint chips, so humid Indian homes need care with it. A stainless steel frame does not rust, and at JagMag the steel carries a lifetime warranty against rust.
What “wrought iron” really means today
True wrought iron was made by hand in old forges. The last big forge in the world closed in England in 1973. Nobody makes true wrought iron on a large scale anymore.
So the word now means a style, not a metal. Ironart, a blacksmith workshop in Bath, England, says that today virtually all ironwork is made from mild steel.
Mild steel is the everyday steel of gates, grills and window frames. Mild steel is low in cost, strong and easy to bend into curls. Bare mild steel rusts, so makers paint it or powder coat it. Powder coat is a dry paint that is baked on in an oven.
The paint keeps the air and water away. But paint can chip at a screw, a joint or a cut edge. Damp air then reaches the steel, and rust starts at that spot. Our monsoon months give rust a lot of damp air to work with.
On 9 October 2026 we opened 28 IndiaMART listings for “wrought iron chandelier”. Thirteen named wrought iron as the material grade. None of the 28 said mild steel. On Pepperfry, 7 of the first 10 chandeliers on its chandelier page had “iron” in the name.
So the label alone does not tell you the metal. A clear answer from the seller, written on the bill, tells you far more.
Iron-look chandeliers are not bad. You simply need to know what metal you are buying, and what care it needs.
How to check a wrought iron chandelier yourself
You can do these checks in a shop, or on a call with the seller.
- Ask the seller: “Is the frame mild steel, cast iron or stainless steel?”
- Hold a fridge magnet to an arm, because a magnet grabs iron and mild steel hard.
- Remember that stainless steel holds a magnet only weakly, and only at bends, so a magnet cannot prove the grade.
- Look closely at the screws, joints and cut ends, since rust starts where paint is thin.
- Ask for the metal and the rust warranty in writing on the bill.

The magnet and the bill tell you most of the story. Here is how the two kinds of chandelier compare once they are on your ceiling.
Side by side
| What you care about | JagMag stainless steel chandelier | “Wrought iron” chandelier |

| The metal | 304 stainless steel all the way through | Usually mild steel under paint |
| Rusts if the paint chips? | No | Yes, starting at the chip |
| Magnet check | Barely holds | Grabs hard |
| Rust warranty | Lifetime, in writing | Ask the seller |
| Spare arms later | Kept for 10+ years | Ask the seller |
Where the iron chandelier is better
Mild steel is low in cost and very easy to shape. So iron chandeliers often cost less and come in many curly, classic designs.
Some sellers give a long warranty too. Two iron chandeliers we opened on Pepperfry listed a 36-month warranty. If you want the iron look for a dry room, an iron chandelier can be a fair choice.
What we do at JagMag
JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. We have made lights in our own factory since 2015. Every metal part we make is 304-grade stainless steel, the same family of steel as a good kitchen sink.
Each frame is cut, bent and joined by hand in our factory. Then we finish the steel in bronze, brass, antique brass or matte black. You get the classic dark look, with steel under it that does not rust.

The Ardena classic has the curved arms that people love in an iron chandelier. Its frame is stainless steel, and its shades are opal borosilicate glass that glows soft and warm. Bulbs are not included, so fit 3000K warm-white LEDs.
Stainless steel parts on orders from 4 October 2026 carry a lifetime warranty against rust. If a part rusts, we repair or replace it free, as our legal policies state in clause 4.1A. The warranty covers the steel, not the finish on top, so a scratch in the colour is not covered.
A clean, warm light over the dining table is part of the harmony Vastu thinking has always valued. Steel that stays clean keeps that calm for years.
If an arm or a cup ever breaks, you do not need a new light. We keep spare parts for 10+ years, because we make the parts ourselves. Send us a photo of the broken part, and we will match it from our chandelier spare parts range.

FAQs
Is wrought iron still made today?
No, true wrought iron is no longer made on a large scale. The last big forge closed in 1973, so most “wrought iron” sold today is mild steel shaped in the wrought iron style.
Does a wrought iron chandelier rust?
Yes, a wrought iron chandelier made of painted mild steel can rust once the paint chips. Rust usually starts at screws, joints and cut edges, and damp monsoon air speeds it up.
How can I tell if a chandelier is stainless steel?
Ask the seller to write the metal on the bill, and use a magnet as a first check. Iron and mild steel grab a magnet hard, while stainless steel holds it only weakly.
Is an iron chandelier good for Indian homes?
An iron chandelier can work well in a dry room if you touch up chipped paint quickly. For humid rooms, kitchens and coastal cities, a stainless steel frame is the safer choice.
Does the JagMag rust warranty cover the finish?
No, the JagMag warranty covers the stainless steel against rust, not the colour finish on top. The warranty is lifetime and applies to orders from 4 October 2026.
Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Vastu inspires harmony. Light brings it to life. That is JagMag.
