Cheap Chandelier: What It Really Costs Over the Years

Cheap chandelier arm with chipped paint and rust beside a clean stainless steel chandelier arm (illustration)

The cheap chandelier looked perfect in the photo. Gold arms, warm bulbs, and a price that felt like a win. You hung it in the hall before Diwali.

Two monsoons later, you see a small brown spot near a screw. The paint around the spot has lifted. A year after that, one arm bends when the electrician cleans the light.

You call the shop. The shop no longer stocks that model. Nobody sells one arm on its own.

Below, you will see why a cheap chandelier can cost you more over the years. You will also get five checks that tell you before you pay.

The short answer

A low-priced chandelier is cheap on the day you buy it. If the frame is painted iron and nobody keeps spare parts, one chip or one broken arm can mean a whole new light. Count the years a light will last, not only the price, and ask for spares and a written warranty.

What a cheap chandelier really costs you

Every light has two prices. The first price is on the tag. The second price is the tag divided by the years the light stays on your ceiling.

Say two lights cost the same. One lasts three years, and the other lasts ten. The first light costs you about three times more for every year you use it.

So the real question is simple: how many years will this light give you? Two things decide the answer. The first is the metal under the paint. The second is whether you can buy one spare part.

Many low-priced chandeliers on marketplaces list iron or mild steel. Mild steel is ordinary steel that rusts in damp air, so a coat of paint goes on top. On IndiaMART, we read eight iron chandelier listings. They said “Material: Iron” or “Material Grade: Mild Steel”, and none of the eight stated a warranty.

Paint protects iron only while the paint stays whole. Engineerfix, an engineering guide, explains that a chip or a deep scratch lets moisture reach the metal. Rust starts at the chip and then spreads under the paint around it.

Monsoon damp, kitchen steam and cleaning cloths all test the paint on a chandelier over the years.

The second thing is spare parts. A chandelier has many small parts: arms, holders, glass shades and the ceiling cup. When one part breaks, the light is only as good as the part you can get.

If the seller stops stocking that model, a broken arm can turn into a new chandelier. At that moment, the cheap chandelier becomes the costly one. Our guide to chandelier repair shows who you can call when a part breaks.

How to check it yourself

  1. Read the material line, and if it says iron, mild steel or only “metal”, ask what the metal really is.
  2. Look for the warranty line, and ask for the warranty in writing before you pay.
  3. Ask the seller, “If one arm breaks in year five, can I buy only that arm?”
  4. Ask who made the light and where, so you know who to call later.
  5. Do the years math: divide the price by the years you expect to use the light.

A seller who keeps spares will answer the third question in one line. If the answer is unclear, treat the unclear answer as your answer. Our guide to chandelier warranty shows what a written rust cover looks like.

Where the low-priced light is better

The day-one price is lower. If you need a light for a short stay or a rented flat, a lower price can be the right choice.

Some are made in India too. Two of the eight IndiaMART listings we read said “Made in India”. Sellers in Moradabad, Delhi and Saharanpur list many of these lights.

A dry room is kind to paint. In a dry room where the paint never chips, a painted iron chandelier can serve you well.

What we do at JagMag

JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting maker in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. We have made lights in our own factory since 2015, and we make each part ourselves.

Take our mid century modern chandelier, the Arlo. The hub starts as a block of teak. A craftsman turns the teak on a lathe, sands it smooth, oils it, and leaves the grain alone.

Wood and brass chandelier with four hand-spun bronze reflector shades by JagMag
The Arlo: a turned teak hub with 304 stainless steel arms and hand-spun reflectors, made in our Greater Noida factory.

The arms and reflectors are 304 stainless steel, the steel family used in kitchen and food equipment. Each reflector is spun by hand over a form, one at a time. World Stainless, the global steel body, explains that stainless steel is a solid material, not a coating on ordinary steel. So a scratch does not open a door for rust.

Our Legal Policies (4.1A) give a lifetime warranty against rusting on the stainless steel parts, for orders from 4 October 2026. Spare reflectors, arms and canopies stay available for 10+ years, and you can see our chandelier spare parts online.

Want another finish or arm count? We make it in 15–20 working days. Teak and warm 3000K light over a dining table give the room a grounded feel, the kind of harmony Vastu has always valued.

FAQs

Is a cheap chandelier worth buying?

Yes, for a dry room or a short stay. For a light you want to keep for ten years, check three things first: the metal, the spare parts and the written warranty. The answers decide how long the light lasts.

Why does my chandelier rust?

Most often, the frame is iron or mild steel and the paint has chipped. Damp air reaches the bare metal through the chip, and rust spreads under the paint. Stainless steel is solid all the way through, so there is no paint layer to fail.

Can I buy spare parts for an old chandelier?

Only if the maker or seller still keeps them, so ask before you buy. JagMag keeps spares such as arms, reflectors and canopies for 10+ years for the lights we make.

Do JagMag chandeliers come with a warranty?

Yes. The stainless steel parts carry a lifetime warranty against rusting, for orders from 4 October 2026. Lights with a built-in LED also get one year on the LED module. Holder lights ship without bulbs.

Where do I find a chandelier’s material on a listing?

Look for the Material or Material Grade line on the product page. If the line says iron, mild steel or only “metal”, ask the seller to name the metal in writing.

Nature gives the material. Human hands give it meaning. Light brings it to life. That is JagMag.
