304 Stainless Steel: The Quiet Frame Behind Our Lights

304 stainless steel holds the stone, crystal and glass in our lights. What it is, why it resists rust, and our lifetime rust warranty. See our lights.

In the last post we wrote about natural crystals: quartz, jade and K9 crystal. Each of them needs something strong to hold it. So does every piece of stone, wood, cane and glass we use.

Today we write about that quiet part of a light: the frame. Every metal part we make is 304 stainless steel. You rarely notice the frame, and we like it that way. The natural material should take your eye.

Still, the frame does real work. For years, the frame carries the stone in humid rooms and on gate pillars in the rain. Our story begins with nature. The frame is the strength that keeps nature in place.

Every natural material needs a frame

A slab of alabaster cannot hang on a wall by itself. A ring of crystal needs a ring to sit on. A cane shade needs a hoop to keep its shape.

So every light has metal parts. A wall plate. An arm. A ring. A canopy on the ceiling. A rod or a chain. These parts carry the weight of the natural material, every single day.

Indian homes are hard on metal. The air is humid in the monsoon. Coastal cities carry salt in the air. Many homes sit close to a kitchen or a bathroom. Ordinary steel starts to rust in these conditions, and rust spreads. In time, rust can stain a wall or weaken a joint.

We did not want a beautiful stone on a frame that fails. So we chose one metal for every part we make.

What 304 stainless steel is, in plain words

Stainless steel is steel with chromium added. Chromium is a hard, shiny metal. Steel needs at least about 10.5% chromium to be called stainless.

304 stainless steel carries about 18% chromium and about 8% nickel. People often call it 18/8 steel. Nickel makes the steel easier to shape, and it helps the steel resist rust.

The chromium does the main job. Chromium meets the oxygen in the air and forms a very thin layer on the surface. You cannot see the layer. The layer keeps water and air away from the steel underneath.

The layer also repairs itself. If a scratch cuts through it, the chromium meets air again and the layer forms again. No paint does that.

Mild steel is ordinary steel with no chromium layer. Paint protects mild steel only until the paint chips. We explain the difference in our guide on mild steel vs stainless steel lights.

Our craftsmen cut, polish and finish the steel

A frame starts as plain sheets, tubes and rods of 304 stainless steel. In our Greater Noida factory, our craftsmen cut each part, then polish and finish it.

The work needs care. A plate must sit flat on the wall. A ring must stay perfectly round, so the crystal or shade hangs even. A joint must hold the weight of stone for years.

Then comes the finish: matte black, a brushed gold or brass finish, chrome or a mirror polish. The finish is only the colour of the surface. The material underneath is always 304 stainless steel.

The steel matters most outdoors. Our alabaster outdoor wall light holds two panels of real alabaster in a matte black stainless steel frame. The light is rated IP65. IP65 means the light keeps out dust and handles rain from any side. The frame faces sun and monsoon at your gate, year after year.

Nature gives the stone. Human hands shape the steel that holds it. Both carry the effort of the people who made them.

We put our promise on rust in writing

We trust 304 stainless steel, so we give a lifetime warranty against rusting. The warranty covers orders placed on or after 4 October 2026.

Say a stainless steel part we made rusts in normal home use, indoors or outdoors. We repair or replace that part free of charge. You only need the original invoice. You can read the full terms in section 4.1A of our Legal Policies.

We are clear about the limits too. The warranty covers rust on the steel part. The warranty does not cover the surface finish, scratches or dents, or damage from harsh chemical cleaners.

A good frame needs very little from you. Still, every material in a light likes a little care. In the next post we write about caring for stone, wood, fibre and glass.

FAQs

What is 304 stainless steel?

304 stainless steel is steel with about 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The chromium forms a thin, invisible layer that protects the steel from rust and repairs itself when scratched.

Does stainless steel rust?

304 stainless steel resists rust very well in normal home use, indoors and outdoors. We back our steel parts with a lifetime warranty against rusting on orders from 4 October 2026.

Is the gold or black colour also stainless steel?

The colour is a finish on the surface of the steel. The part underneath is always 304 stainless steel.
