You are choosing a glass chandelier for your dining room. A friend says, “Go to Firozabad. The whole city makes glass.” The prices are good and the colours are lovely.
The seller says “pure glass”. You nod. But you have no idea what kind of glass it is. You do not know what metal holds it, or where to find one globe if a child’s ball hits it.
Glass is not just glass. Two globes can look the same on the shelf and behave very differently over a hot bulb for ten years.
Below, you will learn the two kinds of glass and how to check a Firozabad glass chandelier before you buy. You will also see where we stand.
The short answer
Firozabad makes beautiful glass, and most of it is ordinary soda-lime glass. JagMag uses borosilicate glass, which handles heat and sudden temperature change better. We also keep every spare globe for 10+ years, so one broken piece never means a new chandelier.
What is really going on: two kinds of glass
Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh is India’s best-known glass town. The city has more than 400 glass units, and its glass carries a GI tag. A GI tag is a government label that links a product to the place that made it famous.
The Firozabad GI papers say most products there use soda-lime glass. Soda-lime glass is the everyday glass of drinking tumblers and window panes. Soda-lime glass is cheap to melt, easy to colour and good for many things.
The same GI papers say borosilicate glass is used for laboratory glassware and pieces that need clarity. Borosilicate glass is the kind used in a science lab and in heat-proof kitchen glassware.
Why does the glass type matter in a light? A globe sits close to a bulb for years. The bulb heats one side. A fan or an AC cools the other side. SCHOTT, a large German glass maker, says borosilicate glass can take extreme and changing temperatures.
Soda-lime glass can work well in a light too. But soda-lime glass handles sudden heat change less well. Borosilicate glass is used in some lighting lenses and street-lamp parts for the same reason. So the kind of glass is worth knowing, especially over a hot bulb.
The second question is the frame. Glass hangs on metal arms. If the metal rusts, the glass can be perfect and the chandelier still looks old.
Colour is a separate question. Both kinds of glass can be coloured while they are made. Amber, smoked, opal white or clear, the colour tells you nothing about the glass underneath. Only the seller can tell you that, so ask.
The third question is spares. A glass globe can break from a knock or a fall. A maker who keeps that exact globe saves the whole chandelier.
How to check a Firozabad glass chandelier yourself
- Ask the seller to write the glass type on the bill: soda-lime or borosilicate.
- Read the material line on any online listing, and look for the glass type by name.
- Hold a magnet to the arms; ask what metal they are if the magnet sticks.
- Ask for the warranty in writing, and ask what part it covers.
- Ask if you can buy one spare globe of the same size later.

In October 2026 we read 11 glass chandelier listings from Firozabad sellers on IndiaMART. None named the glass type, and none stated a warranty. Most said only “Material: Glass”. So ask, and get the answer on paper.

Where Firozabad is better
Firozabad has glass skill that goes back generations. The bangle craft alone passes through dozens of hands, and that skill shows in coloured glass.
You get a huge range of colours and old-style designs. You can also visit the market, see many pieces in one day, and often pay less for a simple chandelier.
Firozabad glass is made in India too, and we are proud of that. Both sides here are Indian hands.
What we do at JagMag
JagMag Lights is a decorative lighting manufacturer in Greater Noida, making lights in our own factory since 2015. Every glass part we make is borosilicate glass. Clear, opal white, smoked or amber, the base glass is the same. Our glass dome chandelier shows it at its clearest: eight mouth-blown clear borosilicate glass domes on a 100 cm ring, each with a warm 3000K LED inside.
Look at our glass globe chandelier. Eighteen hand-blown opal borosilicate glass globes sit on arms of 304 stainless steel, the same grade as a good kitchen sink. Opal glass is white glass that turns each bulb into a soft, even glow.

Each globe is blown by hand, so each one takes a craftsman’s breath, time and patience. Then we fit and wire every arm in our factory.
The steel parts carry a lifetime warranty against rust for orders from 4 October 2026. The warranty covers the steel, not the glass. If a globe breaks, you buy that one piece from our spare glass globes range, for 10+ years.
Our products are CE, UL and ZED certified, and our certifications page lists what stands behind them.
A warm glow over the dining table also fits Vastu thinking, which values an evenly lit centre of the home. We don’t promise luck. We aim for a room that feels calm.
