At one point we always have to remember that a stair chandelier should generally hang in the exact center of the area of the foyer.

The Height of the Stairs Chandelier

If your stairwell has a good Hight from the base then, it might be the perfect place to hang a chandelier. The selection of the right length from the ceiling is a very crucial part of a stair chandelier.

For a double-height stairwell, the chandelier shouldn’t hang below the second floor.

For example, if there are two floors of 10 feet standard height then the length of the chandelier should be equal to the average height of one floor which is 10 feet only.

If there is any table or any sculpture below the stair chandelier then the gap between the chandelier’s lower part and the item should not decrease lower than 30 inches.

If it is harder to measure the height for your stairwell then go with the basic rule which is, that the average distance between the chandelier and the floor should not be less than 7-8 feet.

For those who believe that mathematical calculation is the best way to calculate the height of the chandeliers properly, there is one more rule that exists which is-

Step 1: Calculate the height of your ceiling in feet

Step 2: Multiply the height of the ceiling by 2.5 or 3 inches to determine your ideal height for the chandelier.

For example, If the height of the ceiling is 20 feet, then

20 x 2.5 = 50, and 20 x 3 = 60.

Then 50 inches to 60 inches should be our ideal height for the chandelier.

Let’s take another example, if your foyer is 10 feet high, then your calculations would be:

14 x 2.5 = 35, and 14 x 3 = 42.

According to the formula 35” – 42” should be the ideal fixture height.

The Diameter of the Stairs Chandelier Fixture

The selection of the diameter of the chandelier is as important as the height. If its diameter is too large, then it makes the stairwell too small, and vice-versa. We have some tips to help you to choose a foyer chandelier that can perfectly fit into the size of your stairwell:

Step 1: Measure the dimensions (length and width) of your stairwell in feet.

Step 2: Then combine the sum of the two dimensions.

Step 3: The diameter of the chandelier will be equal to that sum.

For example, if your stairwell measures 12’d x 11’w x 11’h, you would follow these steps as so:

Step 1: Measure your stairwell which is 12-foot length x 11-foot width

Step 2: 12 + 11 = 23.

then 23 inches should be our ideal diameter.

As another example, if your foyer is 8’ x 10’ with 12’ ceilings, your calculations would be:

Step 1: Measure your foyer in 8-foot length x 10-foot width

Step 2: 8 + 10 = 18. 18 inches will be our ideal diameter.
