How To Choose Chandelier Dimensions

Height

The taller the ceiling, the taller the chandelier Multiply your ceiling height by 2.5-3 to get the recommended measurement in inches

For example, a standard 8-foot ceiling would call for a chandelier height of 20-24 inches.

Diameter

The larger the space, the wider the chandelier The sum of the room's length and width is the recommended measurement in inches Above a dining table, the diameter should be 2/3-3/4 of the table width For example, a 12-by-12-foot room would accommodate a chandelier with a 24-inch diameter.

Hanging Height

Open pathway: at least 7 feet of clearance to the floor

Above a table: 30-34 inchesIn a bathroom: at least 3 feet from the tub

Over a bath tub: 8 feet of clearance (for getting in and out!)

Ceilings over 8 feet: add 3 inches of hanging height per foot

For example, a 10-foot ceiling calls for a hanging length of 36-40 inches

Diameter

To determine the diameter of a light fixture that’s best for your space:

  1. Measure the length and width of the room in feet.
Example: 10 feet by 12 feet
  2. Add the two lengths together.
    Example: 10 + 12 = 22 feet
  3. Swap that value in feet for inches (so 20 feet becomes 20 inches)
    Example: 22 feet > 22 inches
  4. This is the ideal diameter for a light fixture in this room.
    Example: 22 inches wide

Height

To determine the height of a light fixture that’s best for your space:

  1. Start with the height of the room (floor to ceiling) in feet.
    Example: 10 feet high
  2. Multiply the height by 2.5" to 3" per foot.
    Example: 10 x 2.5" to 3" = 25-30 feet
  3. Swap that value to inches (so 20 feet becomes 20 inches).
    Example: 25-30 feet > 25-30 inches
  4. This is the ideal height for a light fixture in this room.

So for this room, you’ll want to look for a light fixture around 22 inches wide and 25-30 inches tall.

Size Rules

For an average size bathroom, choose bathroom sconces that are about 18 inches tall or a little less. For smaller spaces, try smaller sconces of 12 inches or less. In a larger bathroom, you could go for sconces that are 19 inches tall or even taller!

In bathrooms, mount sconces 36 to 40" apart, flanking the mirror, 18 inches from the sink's center line.

The rule of thumb is to mount sconces at eye level, often 65" above the room's finished floor. If the sconces have shades, put the bottom edges of the shades a little below eye level.

Determine the Shade Height

First determine the perfect height range for your  lamp; sit in the space next to where you are going to place the lamp.

Measure from the surface you are placing the lamp to eye level. This is your base measurement.

To find the average height of the shade, divide the base measurement by three.

For example, let’s use 18″. Divide this number by three, which is 6″. This is the average height of the shade.

Decide on a Size

o determine the estimated height, add 18″ to the shade measurement.

Let’s use a 6″ shade for an example. In this case, the height of the lamp you’ll want is 24″ = (18″ + 6″ shade).
